‘도넛 작가’로 알려진 김재용은 웨스트 하트퍼드 대학교 아트 스쿨에서 도자 및 조각을 전공하고 크랜브룩 아카데미 오브 아트에서 석사 학위를 취득하였다. 조각과 도예라는 고전적 매체를 기반으로 일상적이면서도 보편적인 형태인 도넛을 예술적 언어로 확장해온 현대미술가이다. 그는 화려한 색채와 유머, 위트의 코드를 도넛 형상에 담아 삶의 기억과 감정, 이상을 한데 반죽하듯 풀어내며, 남녀노소 누구나 직관적으로 예술을 즐길 수 있기를 바라는 메시지를 전한다.

도자, FRP, 스테인리스 스틸, 크롬 마감 등 다양한 재료와 강렬하게 빛나는 표면을 활용한 그의 작업은 유희적이면서도 감각적인 조형 세계를 형성하며, 형형색색의 도넛 변주를 통해 한계와 제약을 넘어서는 탈구축적 상상력을 투영한다. 적녹색약이라는 개인적 한계를 지닌 그는 작은 색의 조각들을 쌓아 올리며 색에 대한 두려움을 극복했고, 도넛은 자연스럽게 색과 색을 조합하고 실험하는 창작의 도구가 되었다.

그의 도넛 작품 앞에서 관객은 시각적 ‘당 충전’과 같은 즐거움을 얻고, 누군가는 삶의 아름다움을 발견하며, 지친 이들은 위안과 행복을 꿈꾼다. 김재용은 예술을 어렵게 해석하기보다 관람자가 직관적으로 즐기고 느끼는 경험을 중요하게 여기며, 작품을 통해 순수한 기쁨과 치유의 감각을 전달하고자 한다. 개인적 한계와 경험을 창작의 원동력으로 전환해온 그의 작업은 예술이 삶의 약점을 새로운 가능성으로 바꿀 수 있음을 보여준다. 현재 서울과학기술대학교 도예학과 교수로 재직하며 창작과 교육을 병행, 예술을 통해 사회와 다음 세대에 긍정적인 에너지를 확산시키고 있다.

Known as the “donut artist,” Kim Jae Yong studied ceramics and sculpture at the Art School of the University of Hartford and earned his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. He is a contemporary artist who has expanded the everyday, universally familiar form of the donut into a distinctive artistic language grounded in the classical media of sculpture and ceramics. By infusing donut forms with vibrant colors, humor, and wit, he kneads together memories, emotions, and ideals of life, conveying a message that art should be something anyone—regardless of age or background—can enjoy intuitively.

Working with a wide range of materials including ceramics, FRP, stainless steel, and chrome finishes, and emphasizing boldly lustrous surfaces, his practice creates a playful yet sensorial sculptural world. Through colorful variations of donuts, he projects a deconstructive imagination that transcends limits and constraints. Living with red–green color blindness, Kim began making small sculptural pieces of differing colors and forms as a way to embrace joyful creation; as hundreds and thousands of donuts accumulated, they naturally became tools for experimenting with color combinations and overcoming his fear of color.

Before his donut works, viewers experience a kind of visual “sugar boost,” discovering beauty in life, while those worn down by everyday fatigue find comfort and moments of happiness. Rather than encouraging complex interpretation, Kim values the viewer’s immediate, intuitive experience, seeking to convey pure joy and a sense of healing through his work. By transforming personal limitations and lived experience into creative momentum, his practice demonstrates how art can turn life’s vulnerabilities into new possibilities. He is currently a professor in the Department of Ceramics at Seoul National University of Science and Technology, where he continues to balance artistic practice with teaching, spreading positive energy to society and future generations through art.
