김중만의 아버지는 소아과 의사이자 예비역 육군 중위였다. 그는 아버지를 따라 1971년 중학교 3학년 때 아프리카 부르키나파소로 이주하여 빈민국 의료지원 활동에 참여했다. 그곳에 학교가 없어 1972년 프랑스 시골 학교로 유학했으며, 이후 니스 국립응용미술대학에서 서양화를 전공하던 중 사진과 운명적인 만남을 갖는다. 1975년부터 사진작가로 활동하며 1977년 서울에서 첫 전시회를 연 후, 1979년 대한민국으로 귀국했다.

1984년 영화 《고래사냥》의 포스터 광고 사진감독으로 데뷔한 그는 1985년과 1986년 두 차례 국외로 추방당했다. 1988년 한국으로 돌아와 아프리카 사진집 프로젝트를 진행하며 대중에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 청담동 스튜디오 벨벳언더그라운드의 대표이자 NEOLOOK의 편집인으로 활동을 했으며, 보그와 엘르프랑스의 프리랜서로도 많은 작업물을 남겼다. 1977년 프랑스 아를 국제 사진페스티벌에서 젊은 작가상을 받았고, 2000년부터는 김현식, 정우성, 원빈, 배용준 등 1,000여 명의 스타들과 작업했다.

영화 《괴물》, 《타짜》, 《달콤한 인생》 등 영화 포스터, 패션, 광고에 이르는 다양한 분야의 사진 작업으로 명성을 쌓았으며, 2006년에는 ‘사진으로는 돈을 벌지 않겠다’고 선언하고 아프리카 아이들을 후원하며 사진 작업에 전념했다. 2022년 폐렴으로 세상을 떠난 김중만은 정형화된 관습과 앵글을 거부하고 자연스러운 자세의 피사체를 담아내는 패션 사진작가로 유명하다. 그는 꽃, 동물, 인물, 풍경 등 다양한 주제에서 독창적인 색채를 드러내며, 한국을 대표하는 사진작가로 평가받고 있다.

Kim Jung Man’s father was a pediatrician and a reserve first lieutenant in the Korean Army. Following his father, Kim moved to Burkina Faso in Africa in 1971 while he was in his third year of middle school, where he participated in medical aid activities for impoverished regions. As there were no schools there, he studied abroad at a rural school in France in 1972, and later encountered photography in what would become a fateful meeting while majoring in Western painting at the National School of Applied Arts in Nice.

He began working as a photographer in 1975, held his first exhibition in Seoul in 1977, and returned to Korea in 1979. After making his debut in 1984 as the poster advertising photographer for the film *Whale Hunting*, he was expelled from the country twice in 1985 and 1986. Returning to Korea in 1988, he left a strong impression on the public through an African photography book project. He served as the head of Studio Velvet Underground in Cheongdam-dong and as an editor for NEOLOOK, and produced numerous works as a freelance contributor for *Vogue* and *Elle France*. He received the Young Photographer Award at the Arles International Photography Festival in France in 1977, and from 2000 onward worked with more than 1,000 stars including Kim Hyun-sik, Jung Woo-sung, Won Bin, and Bae Yong-joon.

Kim Jung Man built his reputation through photography across diverse fields including film posters, fashion, and advertising, with works for films such as *The Host*, *Tazza: The High Rollers*, and *A Bittersweet Life*. In 2006, he declared that he would not earn money through photography and devoted himself to photographic work while supporting children in Africa. Kim Jung Man, who passed away from pneumonia in 2022, is renowned as a fashion photographer who rejected fixed conventions and angles in favor of capturing subjects in natural poses. Revealing distinctive color sensibilities across themes such as flowers, animals, people, and landscapes, he is regarded as one of Korea’s most representative photographers.
