한국 근현대 화단을 풍미한 대가. 창작에 일평생을 바친 예술가, 장욱진 화백은 박수근, 이중섭, 유영국, 김환기와 함께 한국 근현대 미술사를 대표하는 2세대 서양화가이자 1세대 모더니스트이다. 그는 서양화를 기반으로 동양적 정신과 형태를 가미해 한국적 모더니즘을 창출하고 한국미술사의 새로운 장을 연 화가이다.

1917년부터 1990년 말까지 한국 격동의 시간을 온몸으로 겪어내며 일제 강점기와 한국 전쟁 이후 활동을 포함해 장욱진의 삶과 조형적 진면목은 그의 작품에 고스란히 드러난다. 다정다감한 집들과 시골 풍경, 산, 까치, 강아지, 소, 나무, 해와 달 등 일상의 흔하고 소박한 것들을 소재로 해학이 담긴 장욱진 예술의 전형을 열었다. 자연과 더불어 살며 단순한 선과 독창적인 색채의 그림을 선보인 그는 세련된 표현과 조형적 치밀성으로 독특한 화풍을 확립했다.

자연과 사물들을 그대로 재현하는 것이 아니라 사물 안에 내재해 있는 근원적이고 정신적인 본질을 추구하였다. 그렇기에 장욱진의 작품은 단순하면서도 대담하다. 평생을 ‘나는 심플하다’라고 외치며 자연 속에 살면서 그림을 통해 동화적이고 이상적인 내면세계를 표현했기에 화폭 속에 기쁨과 유희의 기운이 가득하다.

경기도 양주시에 장욱진 미술관이 있으며, 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관 및 리움미술관 등에 소장되어 있다.

A towering master who shaped Korea’s modern and contemporary art scene, Chang Uc Chin was an artist who devoted his entire life to creation. Alongside Park Soo-Keun, Lee Jung-seob, Yoo Young-kuk, and Kim Whanki, he is regarded as a second-generation Western-style painter and a first-generation modernist representing Korean modern and contemporary art history. Grounded in Western painting yet infused with Eastern spirit and form, he forged a distinctly Korean modernism and opened a new chapter in Korean art.

Living through Korea’s turbulent history from 1917 until the end of 1990—including the Japanese colonial period and the years following the Korean War—Chang Uc Chin experienced these upheavals firsthand, and both his life and his true sculptural and pictorial vision are fully reflected in his works. Using familiar and modest subjects such as warm, affectionate houses, rural landscapes, mountains, magpies, puppies, cows, trees, the sun, and the moon, he established a quintessential Chang Uc Chin aesthetic imbued with wit and humor. Living in close communion with nature, he presented paintings defined by simple lines and original colors, establishing a unique style through refined expression and meticulous compositional structure. Rather than reproducing nature and objects as they appear, he sought the primordial and spiritual essence inherent within them.

For this reason, Chang Uc Chin’s works are both simple and bold. Proclaiming throughout his life, “I am simple,” he lived amid nature and expressed a fairy-tale-like, ideal inner world through painting. As a result, his canvases are filled with a sense of joy and playfulness.

The Chang Uc Chin Museum is located in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, and his works are held in major collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and the Leeum Museum of Art.
