'보자기' 작가로 잘 알려진 김시현 작가는 28년 경력의 중견 화가로 지난 16년 동안 우리의 전통 생활 문화인 보자기를 오브제(objet)로 활용하여 현대적으로 재해석하는 작업을 통해 대중의 사랑과 주목을 받아왔다. 그동안 재현된 현대 미술에서 보자기는 늘 있었으나 비녀, 꽃, 책, 댕기 등 여성을 상징하는 장신구는 없었다.

여기서 한 걸음 더 나가 한지(韓紙)에 스민 민화(民畵)를 품고 가장 한국적인 금동 미륵보살 반가사유상(金銅彌勒菩薩半跏思惟象)과 가장 세계적인 코카콜라 그리고 한글과 역시 코카콜라와의 조우 등은 끊임없이 새로움을 추구하는 김시현 그림의 황홀한 생명력을 상징한다. 제국의 상징과 문화의 호혜라는 양가적 이미지의 보자기를 전통과 병치함으로써 생기는 도도한 예술적 충격, 김시현 작가의 ‘유연함’만이 설명할 수 있다. 작가 김시현은 개인전을 국내외에서 45회 열었으며, 광주디자인비엔날레, 부산비엔날레 등을 포함해 450여 회의 기획 단체전에 초대되었다.

이외에도 KIAF, 홍콩, 독일, 미국, 시드니, 싱가포르 국제아트페어에 초대되었고 김시현의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 서울시립미술관, 경기도미술관, 양평군립미술관 그 외 해외 대사관에 비롯해 여러 곳에 소장되어 있다. 김시현 작가의 그림은 중학교와 고등학교 미술 교과서에도 실렸고 이어령 박사의 저서 <이어령의 보자기 인문학> 책표지와 러시아에서 번역한 용혜원 시집 <류보비 · 사랑> 표지에도 등장한다.

Widely recognized as the artist of bojagi, Kim Sihyun is an established mid-career painter with over 28 years of artistic practice. For the past 16 years, she has garnered public attention and acclaim by reinterpreting bojagi—a traditional element of Korean everyday culture—as a contemporary artistic objet. While bojagi has appeared in modern art in various forms, symbolic feminine objects such as hairpins, flowers, books, and daenggi ribbons had largely been absent until Kim’s work brought them into focus.

Taking this exploration a step further, Kim incorporates Korean folk paintings (minhwa) absorbed into traditional hanji paper, juxtaposing them with iconic images such as Korea’s most quintessential cultural symbol, the Gilt-Bronze Pensive Bodhisattva, and one of the world’s most globalized icons, Coca-Cola. Encounters between Hangul and Coca-Cola likewise exemplify the vibrant vitality of Kim Sihyun’s paintings, which are driven by an unceasing pursuit of new visual possibilities. The powerful artistic impact generated by placing the bojagi—a symbol imbued with both imperial imagery and cultural reciprocity—alongside Korean tradition can be explained only by the unique “flexibility” inherent in Kim’s artistic vision.

Kim Sihyun has held 45 solo exhibitions in Korea and abroad and has been invited to participate in approximately 450 curated group exhibitions, including the Gwangju Design Biennale and the Busan Biennale. She has also taken part in major international art fairs such as KIAF, as well as exhibitions in Hong Kong, Germany, the United States, Sydney, and Singapore. Her works are held in numerous public and institutional collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Art Bank, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Yangpyeong Art Museum, and various overseas embassies.

Kim Sihyun’s paintings have been featured in middle and high school art textbooks in Korea. Her work also appears on the cover of Lee O-young’s book <Bojagi Humanities> and on the cover of the Russian translation of Yong Hye-won’s poetry collection <Lyubov · Love>, further attesting to the broad cultural resonance of her art.
