이우환은 서울대학교 미술대학을 중퇴하고 일본으로 건너가 니혼대학 문학부 철학과를 졸업했다. 일본의 획기적 미술운동인 모노파의 이론과 실천을 주도하고, 동양의 철학을 바탕으로 하여 서양 미니멀리즘의 한계를 극복하며 국제적으로 현대 미술사의 거장으로 자리 잡았다. '점과 선의 대가'로 불리는 이우환의 초기 작품들은 ‘우주 만물은 점에서 시작해 점에서 끝난다’는 스승의 뜻을 잇는 것으로 점이 선이 되고 나아가서는 아무것도 아닐 수 있다는 동양사상에 바탕을 두었다. 이우환의 작업은 ‘획’이 지닌 의미와 ‘그려지지 않은 여백’을 이해해야 한다. 획에는 무한한 순간 속에 정지한 듯, 고요한 가운데 움직이는 듯 정중동, 생동감, 기가 흐른다.

파리비엔날레, 상파울루비엔날레, 카셀도큐멘타 등 권위 있는 국제전에 참여하여 큰 호응을 얻었다. 1994년 밀라노의 무디마 미술관과 국립현대미술관에서 개인전을 열었고, 1997년 파리의 국립 주드폼므(Jeu de Paume) 갤러리와 서울의 갤러리현대, 박영덕화랑에서 개인전을 열었다. 요코하마미술관에서 열린 ‘전후 현대 일본의 전위미술’(1994), 베네치아비엔날레 특별전(1995), 프랑스 퐁피두센터에서 열린 ‘메이드 인 프랑스’(1996) 등에 참여했다. 레지옹 도뇌르훈장, 금관문화훈장, 호암상 예술상 등을 수상했으며 2010년 일본 나오시마에 이우환 미술관이 개관했다. 뉴욕 현대미술관, 교토 국립근대미술관, 드레스덴 국립미술관, 구겐하임 미술관, 퐁피두 센터, 테이트 모던, 국립현대미술관, 리움:삼성미술관 등 전세계 유수의 미술관에 컬렉션으로 소장되어 있다.

Lee Ufan left the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University and moved to Japan, where he later graduated from the Department of Philosophy in the College of Literature at Nihon University. He went on to lead both the theory and practice of Mono-ha, Japan’s groundbreaking postwar art movement, and established himself internationally as a master of contemporary art by transcending the limitations of Western Minimalism through an aesthetic grounded in Eastern philosophy.

Often referred to as the “master of points and lines,” Lee Ufan’s early works inherit his teacher’s belief that “all things in the universe begin with a point and return to a point.” Rooted in Eastern thought, his work explores the idea that a point becomes a line and may ultimately dissolve into nothingness. To understand Lee’s practice, one must grasp the meaning of the brushstroke (hoeg) and the significance of the unpainted void. Within each stroke flows a sense of jeongjungdong—stillness within movement—where vitality and qi circulate, as if motion exists within silence and time is momentarily suspended within the infinite.

Lee Ufan has participated in many of the world’s most prestigious international exhibitions, including the Paris Biennale, the São Paulo Biennial, and documenta in Kassel, receiving widespread acclaim. In 1994, he held solo exhibitions at the Mudima Museum in Milan and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. In 1997, he presented solo exhibitions at the Jeu de Paume in Paris, Gallery Hyundai in Seoul, and Gallery Park Young-duk. He also took part in major exhibitions such as Postwar Avant-Garde Art in Japan at the Yokohama Museum of Art (1994), a special exhibition at the Venice Biennale (1995), and Made in France at the Centre Pompidou (1996).

His honors include the Légion d’Honneur, the Gold Crown Order of Cultural Merit, and the Ho-Am Prize in the Arts. In 2010, the Lee Ufan Museum opened in Naoshima, Japan. His works are held in the collections of leading institutions worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; the Dresden State Art Collections; the Guggenheim Museum; the Centre Pompidou; Tate Modern; the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; and Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art.
