“Empty Picture,” a solo exhibition by Ryu Jae Hyeok, is presented at ARTBASE 26SQM from Jun 1 – Jun 30, 2022. Drawing inspiration from the architectural concept of empty space, the exhibition explores the creative possibilities of absence, erasure, and accumulation. Just as an empty courtyard in traditional Korean architecture allows a building to breathe and connect with its surroundings, Ryu approaches emptiness not as a lack but as a space that welcomes new possibilities. Rather than simply adding paint to a blank canvas, the artist incorporates the act of erasing into the painting process, revealing underlying colors through layers of removal and accumulation. These overlapping colors form distinctive visual harmonies that resist fixed definitions. Reflecting on the relationship between memory and forgetting, Ryu presents the canvas as a compressed space of lived experiences, where conscious and unconscious moments continually emerge, disappear, and shape the present self.

류재혁 개인전 《Empty Picture / 지워 그린 그림》은 2022년 6월 1일부터 30일까지 ARTBASE 26SQM에서 열린다. 이번 전시는 비움과 지움의 행위를 회화의 새로운 표현 방식으로 확장하며, 기억과 망각이 축적되어 형성되는 삶의 층위를 탐구한다. 작가는 건축에서의 'Empty space' 개념에 주목해 비어 있는 공간이 단순한 부재가 아니라 새로운 것을 받아들이는 가능성의 공간임을 이야기한다. 일반적으로 물감을 덧입히는 회화의 과정에 지우는 행위를 더해, 여러 겹 쌓인 색채를 부분적으로 걷어내고 그 아래에 존재하던 색을 드러낸다. 더함과 덜어냄이 반복되며 만들어지는 화면은 서로 다른 색들이 조화를 이루는 독창적인 시각적 구조를 형성한다. 이러한 작업은 기억되는 순간과 잊히는 순간이 함께 현재의 자아를 구성한다는 작가의 사유와 맞닿아 있으며, 의식과 무의식이 만들어낸 삶의 다양한 층위를 하나의 평면에 응축해 보여준다.
