“Kim Kang Yong: Hyper Realistic Bricks” is presented at Sungkok Art Museum in Seoul from Aug 14 – Sep 20, 2020. Organized as the seventh exhibition in the museum's Invitational Exhibition with Korean Veteran Artists series, this retrospective traces nearly five decades of Kim Kang Yong's artistic practice. The exhibition unfolds across three sections, beginning with his hyperrealistic figurative paintings of the 1970s, followed by experiments with soil and sand during the 1980s and 1990s, and culminating in his signature brick paintings developed since 2000. By applying real sand to the canvas and meticulously depicting imagined bricks, Kim creates images that transcend conventional representation and explore the boundaries between reality and illusion. 김강용 개인전 《극사실적 벽돌》은 2020년 8월 14일부터 9월 20일까지 서울 성곡미술관에서 열린다. 성곡미술관의 일곱 번째 '한국원로작가 초대전'으로 마련된 이번 전시는 약 50년에 걸친 작가의 작품 세계를 조망하는 회고전이다. 전시는 1970년대 사회적 현실과 일상의 모습을 담아낸 극사실적 구상회화, 1980~1990년대 흙과 모래를 활용한 재료 및 기법의 실험, 2000년 이후 본격적으로 전개된 대표적인 벽돌 회화까지 세 부분으로 구성된다. 김강용은 실제 모래를 캔버스에 바른 뒤 상상 속의 벽돌을 정교하게 표현하며 현실과 환영, 재현과 추상의 경계를 탐구한다. 반복되는 벽돌의 형태와 질감, 단색에서 다채로운 색채로 확장되는 화면은 회화의 물질성과 시각적 착시를 드러내며, 이미지와 실재의 관계에 대한 근본적인 질문을 던진다.
