SPACE UM presents the invitational exhibition “The Beauty of the Non-Mainstream” by Song Jin Uk from May 15 – Jun 1, 2024. The exhibition questions standardized ideas of beauty and proposes a shift from “pretty vs. ugly” to “mainstream vs. non-mainstream,” emphasizing that beauty changes across time and culture. Through portraits of figures with features often labeled as flaws—such as protruding teeth, strabismus, freckles, and acne—styled with luxury fashion and jewelry, the artist argues that what makes someone “beautiful” is not the face itself but styling and how one chooses to present oneself.

송진욱 초대전 《비주류의 아름다움》은 스페이스 엄에서 2024년 5월 15일부터 6월 1일까지 진행된다. 이번 전시는 ‘예쁘다/못생겼다’로 나뉘는 획일화된 미의 기준을 재고하며, 시대와 문화에 따라 달라지는 아름다움의 기준을 ‘주류/비주류’라는 관점으로 새롭게 제안한다. 작가는 뻐드렁니, 사시, 주근깨, 여드름 등 결함으로 규정되기 쉬운 특징을 지닌 인물들을 실제 럭셔리 브랜드와 주얼리로 화려하게 스타일링한 이미지로 제시하며, 사람을 아름답게 만드는 핵심이 얼굴이 아니라 ‘스타일링’이라는 명제를 작품으로 드러낸다. 화면 속 패션과 주얼리는 실제 브랜드 제품을 기반으로 하며, 의상 텍스처와 주얼리의 광택, 피부의 디테일을 사실적으로 구현해 관람이 진행될수록 인물의 미적 인식이 전환되는 경험을 만든다.
