The droplets in Yoo Choong Mok’s work are not simple depictions of nature. Through these droplets, the artist poses a quiet question: should disappearance be understood as loss, or can it be seen as another condition that makes existence perceptible? The luminous droplets captured in the works are traces of condensed time, holding onto the fleeting instant in which that question passes by.

Focusing on the transparency and distortion inherent in glass, the artist invites viewers to experience change rather than observe a fixed image. Depending on the viewer’s position and movement, and the flow of light, the droplets continuously reveal different appearances. Hovering as if on the verge of vanishing, they convey the density of time at the boundary between presence and absence, reawakening subtle sensory tremors that often escape our notice.

Yoo Choong Mok has long expanded lines, planes, and spatial structures rooted in obangsaek and traditional dancheong into an abstract visual language inspired by Korean wooden lattice doors. In the works presented here, color is deliberately restrained, allowing a more concentrated sensory experience to emerge. On coarse burlap canvas, the diffusion of black and white ink gradually spreads outward from the transparent droplets, capturing the process by which a fleeting sensation lingers momentarily on the surface before fading away. Rather than overtly asserting Korean aesthetics, this restrained expression allows them to seep quietly into the work through the resonance of empty space.

The droplets in Yoo Choong Mok’s work exist as a phenomenon charged with subtle tension—between disappearance and presence, light and matter, time and perception.
