보자기 작가로 알려진 김시현의 최신작을 소개하는 이번 전시는, 그의 작품 테마인 “소중한 메시지 (The Precious Message)”가 담고 있는 의미를 다시 바라본다.

작가는 과거 작업의 한계를 느끼며 대학원에 진학했고, “나다운 것”을 찾는 과정에서 한국인의 정서로 시선을 돌리게 되었다. 그 여정은 장롱 속에 고이 보관되어 있던 어머니의 이불보에 닿았고, 이는 곧 보자기 작업을 시작하게 된 출발점이 되었다.

김시현이 선택한 보자기는 현대적 패턴보다 한국적인 문양을 우선한다. 이는 작가가 한국인으로서의 정체성을 잃지 않으려는 태도에서 비롯된다. 동시에 작가는 동시대의 문화적 흐름을 반영하기 위해 코카콜라 로고와 같은 글로벌 상징이나 서양 악기인 바이올린을 화면에 배치하며, 시대의 감각을 자연스럽게 화면 안으로 끌어들인다.

김시현이 그리는 보자기는 단순한 색채나 패턴의 조합에 머물지 않는다. 실용적 물건으로서의 보자기가 물건을 싸고 옮기는 역할을 한다면, 작가의 보자기는 마음을 건네는 매개로 확장된다. 보자기 속에 무엇이 들어 있는지는 보이지 않지만, 작가는 그 안에 담긴 물질보다 그것을 건네는 마음, 따뜻한 정성과 배려를 바라봐 주기를 바란다. 부드럽고 유연한 보자기가 다양한 형태를 품어내듯, 보자기는 삶과 감정을 감싸는 존재를 자연스럽게 떠올리게 한다.

한편, 작가의 화면에는 보자기뿐 아니라 비녀, 노리개, 꽃과 같은 전통 장신구들이 함께 등장한다. 이는 오랜 시간 여성의 삶과 몸에 닿아온 상징적 오브제들로, 작가는 이를 작품 속에 녹여 넣으며 여성적 감성과 한국적 정체성을 보다 또렷하게 드러낸다. 이러한 오브제들은 단순한 장식 요소를 넘어, 김시현 작업을 인식하게 만드는 하나의 표식처럼 자리한다.

This exhibition introduces the latest works of Kim Si Hyun, widely known as the “Bojagi artist,” and revisits the meaning embedded in his artistic theme, “The Precious Message.”

Feeling the limitations of his earlier practice, the artist entered graduate school and turned his attention toward Korean sentiment in the process of searching for what felt truly his own. That journey led him to his mother’s quilt wrapping cloth carefully kept inside a wardrobe, which became the starting point of his Bojagi series.

The Bojagi Kim Si Hyun chooses prioritize traditional Korean motifs over contemporary patterns. This stems from his determination not to lose his identity as a Korean artist. At the same time, he incorporates symbols of contemporary culture—such as the Coca-Cola logo—or Western instruments like the violin, naturally drawing the sensibility of the present era into his compositions.

The Bojagi depicted by Kim Si Hyun go beyond a simple combination of colors and patterns. While a traditional Bojagi serves a practical function—wrapping and carrying objects—the artist’s Bojagi expand into a medium that conveys the heart. Although what lies inside the wrapping remains unseen, the artist hopes viewers will focus not on the material contents, but on the warm sincerity and consideration carried within. Just as a soft and flexible Bojagi embraces various forms, it gently evokes the image of something that wraps around life and emotion.

Meanwhile, the artist’s canvases also feature traditional ornaments such as hairpins, norigae, and flowers alongside the Bojagi. These symbolic objects, long connected to women’s lives and bodies, are integrated into his work to more clearly express feminine sensibility and Korean identity. Beyond mere decorative elements, these objects function as distinctive markers that make Kim Si Hyun’s artistic language immediately recognizable.
