윤여걸은 홍익대학교 미술대학 동양화과를 졸업한 후 독일 브라운슈바이크 국립대학에서 회화·판화 전공을 수료하고, 1980년대 초부터 본격적으로 목판화 작업을 시작한 작가이다. 동양화 전공을 바탕으로 판화 매체에 접근하며 독자적인 작업 세계를 구축해 왔다.

작가는 일상성에 관한 주제를 중심으로 자연주의적 시선을 통해 일상의 장면들을 표현하지만, 그 이면에는 작가 자신의 삶과 목판화라는 매체에 대한 개념적 성찰이 함께 내재되어 있다. 1990년대 중반에는 애니메이션 작업에도 주력하며 표현 방식의 확장을 시도했다.

윤여걸은 회화적인 목판화에서 벗어나 새로운 형식과 실험을 지속해 왔으며, 목판화 특유의 기법을 통해 강렬한 흑백의 화면을 구현한다. 1980년대 초반부터 창백한 얼굴과 날카로운 눈을 지닌 강렬한 이미지들을 반복적으로 제시하며, 그의 작품에는 삶과 죽음에 대한 깊은 통찰이 일관된 기조로 담겨 있다.

Yoon Yeo Geul graduated from the Department of Oriental Painting at Hongik University and later completed studies in painting and printmaking at the National University of Braunschweig in Germany. Beginning in the early 1980s, he devoted himself fully to woodcut printmaking, developing a distinctive artistic language rooted in his academic background.

Focusing on themes of everyday life, Yoon depicts ordinary scenes through a naturalistic perspective, while embedding conceptual reflections on his own life and on the medium of woodcut itself beneath the surface. In the mid-1990s, he also concentrated on animation projects, further expanding his modes of expression.

Departing from conventional painterly woodcuts, Yoon has continuously experimented with new forms and approaches. Through the graphic power of woodcut techniques, he presents stark black-and-white compositions. Since the early 1980s, his recurring imagery—pale faces with piercing eyes—has conveyed a consistent and profound meditation on life and death.
