예용칭은 중국 쿤밍에서 태어나 1982년 쓰촨미술대학 회화과를 졸업하고 현재 그 대학에서 교수로 재직 중이다. 그는 베이징, 상하이, 미국, 싱가포르, 런던, 뮌헨 등지에서 개인전을 열었으며, 중국 현대미술대전과 같은 큰 미술대전에도 여러 번 참여했다.

쓰촨미술대학 시절, 그는 폴 고갱의 영향을 받아 열대 지역을 여행하며 고갱 풍의 화풍을 추구했으며, 1990년대 초 중국 미술계에 팝아트가 유행하면서 ‘시적인 팝아트’를 선보였다. 그의 작품은 얼핏 보면 빠르게 그려진 드로잉처럼 보이지만, 의도적으로 계획된 선과 형태가 배경에서 튀어나오는 듯한 느낌을 준다.

그의 작품은 가장 기본적인 요소로 절제된 선과 여백을 활용하며, 이를 통해 관람자에게 해석에 대한 상상력과 개방성을 제공한다. 지난 10년 동안 큐레이터, 예술 행사 주최자, 예술가 커뮤니티 후원자로서도 명성을 쌓아온 예용칭은 왕성하게 활동하고 있으며, 최근에는 수묵화로 전향해 ‘새’ 시리즈에 몰두하고 있다.

Ye Yongqing was born in Kunming, China, and graduated from the Department of Painting at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1982, where he currently works as a professor. He has held solo exhibitions in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, the United States, Singapore, London, and Munich, and has participated multiple times in major art competitions such as the China Contemporary Art Exhibition.

During his time at Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Ye was influenced by Paul Gauguin, and traveled to tropical regions to pursue a style inspired by Gauguin’s work. In the early 1990s, when pop art became popular in China, Ye introduced "poetic pop art," emphasizing the drawn aspects of painting. His works, which may appear to be quickly drawn sketches, are composed of intentionally planned lines and shapes that seem to pop out from the background.

Using basic elements, his works offer an interpretation that invites imagination and openness through restrained lines and the use of negative space. Over the past decade, Ye has earned a reputation as a curator, organizer of art events, and supporter of artistic communities. Recently, he has transitioned into ink painting and become deeply immersed in his 'Bird' series.
