우제길은 1942년 일본 교토에서 태어나 조부와 부친의 고향인 광양에서 유년기를 보냈다. 그는 평생 빛의 수평적·수직적 변화를 주제로 한 기하학적 추상 회화에 몰두하며 독창적인 작품 세계를 구축해왔다.

끊임없는 창작 욕구와 새로움에 대한 갈망 속에서, 그는 모노톤 배경 위에 날카로운 직선으로 빛을 구현한 초기 작업부터 색띠를 활용한 콜라주, 최근에는 다채로운 색채미가 두드러지는 작품에 이르기까지 다양한 변주를 시도해왔다. 항상 우리 곁에 존재하는 빛은 어둠 속에서 비로소 그 부재가 인식되며, 우제길은 이러한 대비 속에서 빛의 본질을 집요하게 탐구한다.

그의 작업은 어둠과 빛이 공존하는 장면을 통해 삶의 희망과 절망을 동시에 드러낸다. “과거의 빛은 절망의 빛, 현재의 빛은 희망의 빛”이라는 작가의 말처럼, 그는 빛과 어둠, 희망과 절망이 지닌 상징적 의미를 치열하게 사유해 왔다. 우제길은 한국미술대상전 특별상과 제1회 중앙미술대전 특선을 수상했으며, 인도 비엔날레, 아세아 현대미술제, 한국미술대전 등 국내외 주요 전시에 참여했다. 또한 예술의전당에서 여러 차례 개인전을 개최하며 꾸준한 창작 활동을 이어가고 있다.

Woo Jae Gil was born in Kyoto, Japan, in 1942 and spent his childhood in Gwangyang, the hometown of his grandfather and father. Throughout his life, he has devoted himself to geometric abstraction centered on the horizontal and vertical transformations of light, developing a highly distinctive painterly language.

Driven by an unceasing desire for creation and renewal, Woo has explored a wide range of variations—from early works that rendered light through sharp linear forms against monochromatic backgrounds, to collage works using bands of color, and more recent paintings characterized by rich and vibrant color harmonies. While light is ever-present around us, its absence is most keenly felt in darkness, a contrast that lies at the core of his artistic inquiry.

Through the coexistence of darkness and light, Woo’s work expresses both hope and despair inherent in human life. As he states, “The light of the past is the light of despair, while the light of the present is the light of hope,” articulating his ongoing exploration of the symbolic meanings of light and darkness. Woo Jae Gil has received the Special Prize at the Korean Art Awards and a Special Selection Prize at the inaugural JoongAng Art Competition, and has participated in numerous international and domestic exhibitions, including the India Biennale, the Asian Contemporary Art Exhibition, and the Korean National Art Exhibition. He has also held multiple solo exhibitions at the Seoul Arts Center, sustaining his lifelong dedication to artistic practice.
