위동명은 뉴욕 Pratt Institute 석사과정에서 커뮤니케이션 디자인을 전공하고, 홍익대학교 대학원 시각디자인 전공 박사과정을 수료한 작가이다. 'Where You Should Go(2008, New York)', 'Traces in the City(2009, New Jersey)', '9Rs of Sustainability(2012, 서울)' 등의 개인전과 D-Node의 'Hanging Fortune(2010, New Jersey)' 등 다양한 기획전시에 참여했다.

그는 D-Node 크리에이티브 디렉터와 단국대학교 시각디자인과 겸임교수직을 역임했으며, 한국 민화의 아름다움과 특성을 현대적 감성과 디자인 기법으로 새롭게 해석했다. 그의 작품은 전통 민화의 깊이를 유지하면서도 생명감을 불어넣고, 민화의 다양한 가능성을 보여준다.

디자인 전문가인 위동명은 미니멀한 디자인적 접근을 통해 민화에 동시대성을 부여하면서도 고전적인 깊이를 놓치지 않는다. 그의 작품은 민화의 새로운 해석을 통해 전통과 현대가 어떻게 유기적으로 결합될 수 있는지 그 가능성을 제시한다.

Wi Dong Myoung holds a Master’s degree in Communication Design from Pratt Institute in New York and completed his PhD studies in Visual Design at Hongik University. He has participated in solo exhibitions such as "Where You Should Go" (2008, New York), "Traces in the City" (2009, New Jersey), and "9Rs of Sustainability" (2012, Seoul), as well as group exhibitions including D-Node’s "Hanging Fortune" (2010, New Jersey).

He served as the Creative Director at D-Node and an adjunct professor at the Department of Visual Design at Dankook University. Wi’s work reinvigorates the beauty and characteristics of Korean traditional folk paintings (Minhwa) by infusing them with contemporary sensibilities and design techniques. His pieces demonstrate how Korean folk painting can evolve and be interpreted in new ways.

As a design professional, Wi Dong Myoung brings a minimalist approach to his artwork, imbuing traditional Minhwa with a modern sensibility while preserving its classical depth. His works explore the possibilities of combining tradition and contemporary aesthetics, suggesting how these elements can coexist and enhance each other.
