왕샹밍은 1982년 상해사범대학교 미술학과를 졸업했고, 현재는 모교 미술학과의 교수로 재직 중이다. 중국미술가협회 회장, 상해 청년미술가협회 이사를 지냈고, 상해유화 및 조각연구소에서 활동하며 중국 화단에 기여하고 있다.

그의 작업은 이전의 중국미술이 보여줬던 서사적 이슈에서 벗어나, 포스트모더니즘이 지향하는 개인의 이슈와 아름다운 사물에 주목하고 있다. 그는 밝고 선명한 색채의 형태와 환상적인 느낌의 요소들을 콜라주해 삶의 역동성을 표현한다.

그의 작품에는 큰 꽃이나 거리의 사람, 위인이나 숙녀, 군인 등이 등장하는데 작가의 의도대로 재배치해 현대적 감각의 독특한 개성으로 그려낸다. ‘새, 홍등, 한가로움’ 등의 시리즈로 대표되는 작품들은 공통으로 소박한 대상과 이야기에서 출발한다. 수많은 이미지가 충돌하고 조화하는 그래픽적인 화풍으로 독보적인 회화 세계를 구축하고 있다 점에서 널리 주목받고 있는 작가이다.

Xiangming Wang graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Shanghai Normal University in 1982 and is currently a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at his alma mater. He has served as president of the China Artists Association and as a director of the Shanghai Young Artists Association, and continues to contribute to the Chinese art scene through his work at the Shanghai Institute of Oil Painting and Sculpture.

Moving away from the narrative-driven issues that characterized earlier Chinese art, his work focuses on personal themes and beautiful objects aligned with postmodern sensibilities. He expresses the dynamism of life by collaging vividly colored forms with elements that evoke a sense of fantasy.

Large flowers, people on the street, historical figures, ladies, and soldiers appear in his paintings, rearranged according to the artist’s intent and rendered with a distinctive individuality and contemporary sensibility. Works represented by series such as “Birds,” “Red Lanterns,” and “Leisure” commonly originate from simple subjects and stories. He has drawn wide attention for establishing a singular painterly world through a graphic style in which countless images collide and harmonize.
