SHIN CHANG YONG
신창용은 홍익대학교 회화과 및 동 대학원 회화과를 졸업한 작가로, 통인화랑, 선 컨템포러리, 베이징 MK2 SPACE 등에서 10여 회의 개인전을 개최했으며, 홍콩 2013 소버린 아시안 아트 프라이즈를 비롯해 170회 이상의 단체전에 참여한 정통파 작가이다.
그는 ‘덕화’와 ‘RNB’라는 새로운 장르를 개척하며 자신만의 세계관을 공고히 해왔다. ‘덕화’는 ‘덕후의 그림’을 의미하며, 영화 속 영웅과 빌런들이 한데 모여 캠핑을 하거나 프로젝트 과정 중 라면으로 소탈한 회식을 하는 장면이 주요 모티브로 등장한다. 고립되고 고독했던 존재들이 일상의 풍경 속에서 함께 어울리는 모습은 보편적이면서도 의외성을 지니며 신선한 즐거움을 전한다.
신창용은 영화, 만화, 애니메이션 등 대중과 공감할 수 있는 매체에서 영감을 받아 삶과 역사, 정치적 맥락을 담아낸 스토리 있는 작품으로 관객과 소통하고 있다.
Shin Chang Yong graduated from the Department of Painting at Hongik University and completed his graduate studies in painting at the same institution. He has held more than ten solo exhibitions at venues including Tongin Gallery, Sun Contemporary, and MK2 SPACE in Beijing, and has participated in over 170 group exhibitions, including the 2013 Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong.
He has established his own artistic universe by developing new genres known as “Deokhwa” and “RNB.” The term “Deokhwa,” meaning “paintings by a devoted fan,” often depicts scenes in which heroes and villains from films gather together to camp or casually share instant noodles during a project. These portrayals of once-isolated figures coming together in ordinary situations offer both familiarity and unexpected delight.
Drawing inspiration from films, comics, and animation—media that readily resonate with the public—Shin Chang Yong creates narrative-driven works that reflect on life, history, and politics, engaging audiences through shared cultural experiences.
