판화를 전공한 성태진 작가의 작품에 등장하는 주인공은 대부분 태권 브이다. 성냥개비를 입에 물고 총을 들고 있는 익숙한 ‘영웅 본색’의 한 장면이 펼쳐지기도 하고, 삼국지의 심오한 서사까지 작품의 소재가 된다. 여기에 감성적이면서도 허를 찌르는 배경 텍스트가 더해지는데, 만화 주제가부터 유행가, 비장한 시조에 이르기까지 차분히 읽다 보면 웃음이 나면서도 작품을 다시 곱씹게 만든다.

작품 속 태권 V는 더 이상 영웅이 아니다. 그는 때로는 순수하고 유머러스하며 천진하지만, 동시에 우유부단하고 부조리한 현대인의 가벼운 삶을 살아가는 생활인으로 등장한다. 그림 속 태권 V는 용맹한 기백 대신 100cc 오토바이에 철가방을 싣고 자장면을 배달하고, 술에 취해 친구와 어깨동무하며 젊음의 슬픔을 토로하기도 한다. 또 누군가를 그리워하며 실연을 겪고, 갑옷을 갖춰 입은 채 비장한 모습으로 자력갱생을 다짐하기도 한다.

성태진은 유년 시절의 추억이라는 대중적 공감대를 바탕으로, 만화 특유의 극단적인 평면성과 글과 그림이 결합된 서사 구조를 활용해 ‘태권 브이 세대’가 품었던 영웅의 꿈이 사라진 이후, 청년 백수로 대변되는 현대인의 무기력한 현실을 이야기한다. 그림 위에 배경처럼 깔린 글씨들은 만화 속 대사처럼 작품의 주제를 더욱 분명히 드러내며, 작가가 말하는 ‘재미즘’을 한층 강렬하게 각인시킨다.

Seong Tae Jin, who majored in printmaking, most often features Taekwon V as the main character in his works. Familiar scenes reminiscent of the iconic “A Better Tomorrow” imagery—such as a figure holding a gun with a matchstick in his mouth—appear alongside themes drawn from the profound narratives of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. These images are accompanied by emotionally charged yet unexpectedly sharp background texts, ranging from cartoon theme songs and popular music to solemn classical verses, which invite both laughter and deeper reflection upon closer reading.

In Seong Tae Jin’s work, Taekwon V is no longer a hero. Instead, he becomes an ordinary figure living the light, sometimes indecisive and absurd life of a modern individual—pure, humorous, and innocent at times. Rather than displaying heroic valor, Taekwon V delivers jajangmyeon on a 100cc motorcycle with a metal delivery box, links arms with friends while drunk to lament the sorrows of youth, longs for someone he misses, suffers heartbreak, or stands armored in a solemn pose, vowing self-reliance.

Drawing on the shared nostalgia of childhood memories, Seong Tae Jin employs the extreme flatness of cartoons and a narrative structure that combines text and image to portray the lethargy of contemporary life—especially that of a generation whose childhood dreams of heroes have faded. The text layered across the background functions like dialogue in a comic, sharpening the meaning of each work and powerfully reinforcing the artist’s pursuit of “fun-ism.”
