Richard Deacon is a leading figure in contemporary British sculpture, born in Wales in 1949 and widely recognized for his innovative use of materials and distinctive formal language. His works balance organic forms with geometric structures, offering both visual and sensory experiences.

Deacon works with an extensive range of materials—including wood, metal, plastic, textiles, marble, clay, foam, leather, and paper—emphasizing the inherent properties of each. His sensual and abstract sculptures are characterized by irregular, dynamic forms, often revealing their construction processes to invite engagement with the viewer. Twisted and contorted like living organisms, his works resist fixed definitions.

As suggested by their titles, Deacon’s sculptures draw on a wide spectrum of literary references, ranging from biblical texts to the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. He has held numerous solo exhibitions at institutions such as Tate and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and represented Wales at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Awarded the Turner Prize in 1987, Deacon has continued to explore the boundless range of human experience and emotion through poetic sculptural forms.
