Paul Smith is a full-time artist devoted to creating ceramic sculptural works. Through dreamlike and contemplative imagery, his practice envisions a world in which humans and nature can coexist in peaceful harmony.

Defined by elegant curves and concise details, his style is bold and semi-abstract, playfully subverting the conventions of fairy tales and fables to construct new narratives. Smith is particularly drawn to the idea of the “First Kingdom,” a mythical time when animals could speak and the boundary between humans and animals was fluid, using this premise to explore our perception of the animal realm.

Rather than relying on literal representation, his work unfolds through storytelling traditions found in fables, myths, art, books, and film. He is especially influenced by Angela Carter’s animal-themed short stories and novels, using children’s tales as a means to examine universal themes such as love, jealousy, repetition, and trust from an adult-centered perspective. Rooted in a metaphorical tradition, Smith cites a deep admiration for the work of Elie Ndelman. His studio is located on the edge of the Peak District National Park, overlooking the rolling fields and hills of Derbyshire.
