박종용은 2015년 국민대학교 행정대학원에서 미술관학을 수료했으며, 1988년 동서울미술관 관장을 시작으로 서울역사프라자미술관 관장, 내설악 백공미술관 관장으로 활동해 왔다. 그는 뛰어난 묘사력을 바탕으로 풍경, 인물, 동물, 그리고 상상의 신세계까지 다양한 장면을 능수능란하게 그려내 왔다.

그러나 어느 순간부터 미술의 본질에 대한 깊은 고민에 빠지며, 진정한 자연의 본질을 표현하는 작업에 몰두하게 되었다. 그는 모든 만물이 지닌 ‘결’이 자연의 진실임을 발견하고, 각각의 고유한 결은 영겁의 시간과 다양한 환경 속에서 형성된 결과의 산물이라는 결론에 이르렀다. 그의 작품에서는 구체적인 대상이 점차 사라지고, 캔버스와 재료가 지닌 미묘한 물성이 전면에 드러난다.

매 순간 집중해 한 점, 한 점 색을 찍어 나가며 ‘결’을 형상화하는 그의 작업은 치열한 노동이자 수행에 가깝다. 박종용의 예술은 단순한 창작을 넘어 묵언의 수행이자 시간의 기록이며, 자신만의 조형 언어로 완성한 ‘결’의 교향곡이라 할 수 있다. 그는 삶이 다하는 순간까지 예술가로서의 운명을 받아들이고, 무한을 향한 세밀한 관찰과 탐구를 통해 예술혼을 불태우겠다는 다짐을 이어가고 있다.

Park Jongyong completed coursework in Museum Studies at the Graduate School of Public Administration, Kookmin University, in 2015. Beginning with his appointment as director of the Dongseoul Art Museum in 1988, he has served as director of Seoul History Plaza Art Museum and Baekgong Art Museum in Inner Seorak. Based on his outstanding descriptive skills, he has freely depicted a wide range of subjects, from landscapes and figures to animals and imagined worlds.

At a certain point, however, he became deeply absorbed in questioning the essence of art, which led him to focus on expressing the true nature of nature itself. He came to realize that the ‘grain’ inherent in all things represents natural truth, and that each unique grain is the result of immeasurable time and diverse environments. In his recent works, concrete subjects gradually disappear, revealing instead the subtle material qualities of the canvas and mediums.

Through an intense process of placing countless individual dots of color with sustained concentration, he gives form to this concept of ‘grain.’ Park Jongyong’s art goes beyond creation to become a silent discipline and a record of labor—a symphony of ‘grain’ composed in his own sculptural language. Embracing his fate as an artist until the end of his life, he vows to ignite his artistic spirit through meticulous observation and relentless exploration toward the infinite.
