백남준은 경기고를 졸업한 후 일본 도쿄대학에서 미술사, 미학, 음악학, 작곡을 공부했다. 1956년 독일로 유학을 떠나 뮌헨대학교와 프라이부르크 음악학교, 쾰른대학에서 현대음악을 전공했다. 1958년, 전위 음악가 존 케이지를 만나 그의 인생과 예술 세계에 전환점을 맞이했다.

1961년, 플럭서스 운동의 창시자 조지 마키우나스와 만난 백남준은 플럭서스 창립 멤버 중 한 명으로 활동하게 되었으며, 이후 요제프 보이스와 함께 독일 플럭서스 운동을 주도했다. 그는 기존 예술을 전혀 다른 시각에서 해석하며 단순하고 기발한 이미지를 창조해 현대 미술에 큰 변화를 일으켰다.

작곡가이자 시인, 피아니스트, 화가, 비디오 아티스트, 철학자로서 그는 뉴욕과 유럽을 오가며 작업을 이어갔다. 텔레비전을 매개로 다양한 시청각적 경험을 창출하며 기술적 제작자로서 새로운 예술을 선보였다. 2000년에는 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관과 서울 로댕갤러리, 호암미술관에서 대규모 회고전 <백남준의 세계, The Worlds of Nam June Paik>가 열렸다. 그는 비디오 아트와 레이저 아트를 비롯해 끊임없이 변혁을 꿈꿔온 예술 탐험가로, 2006년 1월 74세의 나이로 마이애미 자택에서 타계했다. 유해는 서울, 뉴욕, 독일에 나뉘어 안치되었고, 2008년 경기도 용인에 백남준 아트센터가 개관되었다. 그의 작품은 여전히 세계 곳곳에서 전시되고 있으며, 대중 속에 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.

Nam June Paik graduated from Gyeonggi High School and later studied art history, aesthetics, musicology, and composition at the University of Tokyo. In 1956, he moved to Germany to study contemporary music at Munich University, Freiburg Music School, and Cologne University. In 1958, he met avant-garde composer John Cage, which marked a turning point in his life and artistic vision.

In 1961, Paik met George Maciunas, the founder of the Fluxus movement, and became one of its founding members. Paik went on to lead the German Fluxus movement alongside Joseph Beuys. By reinterpreting traditional art in innovative and simple ways, Paik revolutionized modern art, creating groundbreaking and original visual imagery.

As a composer, poet, pianist, painter, video artist, and philosopher, Paik worked between New York and Europe throughout his life. By using television as a medium, he created multisensory experiences and offered new artistic possibilities through technological assembly. In 2000, major retrospective exhibitions titled *The Worlds of Nam June Paik* were held at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Rodin Gallery in Seoul, and Ho-Am Art Museum. Paik, a true art explorer, continued to push boundaries from video art to laser art until his death in January 2006 at the age of 74 in his Miami home. His remains are interred in Seoul, New York, and Germany, and in 2008, the Nam June Paik Art Center officially opened in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. His works continue to be exhibited globally, living on in the hearts of audiences.
