오태식은 함양에서 태어나 홍익대학교와 대학원에서 디자인을 전공했다. 그는 자유로운 공간의 흰 여백에 ‘사유의 풍경, 풍경에 스미다’ 등의 제목으로 다수의 연작 시리즈를 발표하며, 어린 시절 동심의 세계와 고향의 풍경, 추억을 바탕으로 특유의 사유의 장을 펼쳐 왔다.

10회에 이르는 개인전과 250여 회의 국내외 단체전이 증명하듯 그의 그림은 침착하고 차분하며 정적이다. 무수한 반복과 중첩의 과정을 통해 구축되는 독특한 질감과 구조의 견고함을 추구하며, 점차 풍경산수로 작업 영역을 확장해 가고 있다. 전통 붓을 활용한 서예와 캘리그라피 시도 역시 작품 세계를 넓히는 중요한 요소이다.

자신감 넘치는 푸른 산수화에서는 관념 산수의 맥을 잇는 새로운 문인화의 가능성이 엿보인다. “그의 작품에서 한국화의 현주소와 미래를 엿본다”는 평가처럼, 한국화의 기법을 서양화의 재료로 표현한 실험적인 작업들이 주목받고 있다. 현재 두원공과대학 건축공학과 교수로 재직 중이며, 한국미술협회와 홍익시각디자이너협회 회원으로 활동하고 있다.

Oh Tae Sik was born in Hamyang and studied design at Hongik University and its graduate school. He has presented numerous series under titles such as “Landscape of Contemplation” and “Seeping into the Landscape,” unfolding a distinctive field of reflection based on childhood innocence, memories, and the scenery of his hometown within expansive white spaces.

As evidenced by more than ten solo exhibitions and approximately 250 domestic and international group exhibitions, his paintings are calm, composed, and quiet in tone. Through countless processes of repetition and layering, he pursues a solid structure and unique textures, gradually expanding his work into landscape painting. His use of traditional brushes in calligraphy and lettering has also contributed to broadening his artistic scope.

In his confident blue-toned landscapes, one can sense a new form of literati painting that carries on the lineage of conceptual landscape tradition. As critics note that “his work offers a glimpse into the present and future of Korean painting,” many of his experimental works stand out for expressing Korean painting techniques through the materials of Western painting. He is currently a professor in the Department of Architectural Engineering at Doowon Technical College and is an active member of the Korea Fine Arts Association and the Hongik Visual Designers Association.
