오승윤은 오지호 화백의 둘째 아들로 태어나 홍익대학교를 졸업한 후, 프랑스 아카데미 드 라그랑드 쇼미에르에서 수학하며 한국의 자연과 전통문화를 구상미술로 표현하는 데 몰두한 작가이다. 그는 서구 미술을 체득한 이후에도 한국적 미감의 본질을 탐구하며 자신만의 회화 세계를 구축해 왔다.

1970년부터 국전에서 6회 연속 특선을 수상하며 추천작가 및 초대작가로 활동했고, 한국자연미술대전 운영위원장, 국립현대미술관 원로작가 회화전 운영위원, 대한민국미술대전 심사위원 등 한국 미술계 전반에서 중요한 역할을 맡아왔다. 그는 “한국인의 영혼을 담은 한국적인 그림을 그리고 싶었다”며, 자신의 작품이 자연과 인간의 조화, 그리고 평화를 향한 영원한 명제를 품고 있음을 밝힌 바 있다.

오승윤의 작품은 단청과 민화에서 영감을 받은 오방정색을 바탕으로, 단순한 형식 속에 샤머니즘과 풍수 사상을 결합한 세계관을 담아낸다. 회화뿐 아니라 설치미술 등 다양한 매체를 통해 오방색의 개념을 확장해 왔으며, 1982년 프랑스에서 귀국한 이후 ‘풍수(風水)’ 연작으로 국내외 화단의 주목을 받았다. 특히 그의 작품 <풍수>는 1999년 프랑스 미술 전문지 <Univers Des Arts>의 표지를 장식하며 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 전통색을 사용한 그의 작업은 한국적이면서도 세련된 미감을 지니며, 전통과 현대의 조화를 이룬 예술로 평가받고 있다.

Oh Seung Yun was born as the second son of renowned painter Oh Ji-ho and graduated from Hongik University before continuing his studies at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in France. Immersed in figurative painting, he dedicated his practice to expressing Korean nature and traditional culture through a distinctly Korean visual language.

Beginning in 1970, Oh received Special Selection awards at the National Art Exhibition of Korea for six consecutive years and was later appointed as a recommended and invited artist. He has served in numerous influential roles, including Chair of the Korea Nature Art Exhibition, committee member of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s senior painters exhibition, and judge for the Korea Art Exhibition. He once stated, “I wanted to paint Korean pictures that embody the Korean soul. The eternal theme of my work is harmony and peace between nature and humanity.”

Inspired by dancheong and folk painting, Oh’s work is rooted in the philosophy of Obangsaek—the five traditional Korean colors—interwoven with elements of shamanism and feng shui. His practice spans painting and installation, exploring Obangsaek from multiple perspectives while reinterpreting tradition within a contemporary context. After returning to Korea from France in 1982, his “Feng Shui” series drew significant attention both domestically and internationally. In particular, his work <Feng Shui> was featured on the cover of the French art magazine <Univers Des Arts> in 1999. Employing traditional colors with refined sensibility, Oh Seung Yun’s art is widely regarded as a harmonious synthesis of tradition and modernity.
