후기 작품에는 전쟁의 인상, 시체의 얼굴, 고대 유물과 전통적 상형문자를 연상시키는 암시적인 기호들이 등장한다. 대표작 ‘흑과 백의 율동’은 서예 추상의 형상적 이미지를 드러내며, 이러한 기호들은 사라진 옛 문명의 잔상처럼 화면 위에 떠오른다.

남관은 회화적 요소를 순수한 조형적 모티브로 전환하려는 시도를 지속하며, 동양 전통 색채인 쪽빛을 주조로 사용해 깊은 감성과 밀도를 더했다. 그는 시간의 흐름을 시각화하기 위해 얼룩, 발묵, 드리핑, 데칼코마니 등 다양한 기법을 혼합해 활용했고, 재료가 마모되며 남긴 흔적 자체를 작품의 일부로 드러냈다. 이러한 독창성은 1966년 망통 회화 비엔날레에서 「태양에 비친 허물어진 고적」으로 1등상을 수상하며 프랑스 화단에서 인정받는 계기가 되었다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관에 「역사의 흔적」(1963), 「센 강변」(1968), 삼성미술관에 「대화·절규」 등이 소장되어 있다.

Nam Kwan is regarded as an artist who forged a distinctive form of Eastern abstraction by distilling and sublimating his experiences of the Korean War into his art. Influenced by Art Informel, he transformed the tragedy of war into a personal visual language through prolonged reflection and refinement.

In his later works, suggestive symbols appear—evoking impressions of war, faces of corpses, ancient relics, and traditional pictographs. His renowned work “Rhythm of Black and White” reveals imagery akin to calligraphic abstraction, with abstract signs that can be read as afterimages of ancient civilizations.

Through ongoing efforts to convert painterly elements into pure formal motifs, Nam Kwan employed indigo—a traditional Eastern color—as a dominant tone, enriching his works with emotional depth and resonance. To visualize the passage of time, he actively combined techniques such as staining, ink spreading, dripping, and decalcomania, leaving traces of material erosion as integral components of the work. Demonstrating his originality, he won first prize at the 1966 Menton Painting Biennale for “Ruined Ancient Site Reflected by the Sun,” earning recognition within the French art scene. His works are held in major collections including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea—such as “Trace of History” (1963) and “Along the Seine” (1968)—and the Samsung Museum of Art, which houses “Dialogue·Cry.”
