유산 민경갑 화백은 1933년 충청남도 논산에서 태어나 서울대학교 미술대학을 졸업한 후, 한국화의 독창적인 양식을 개척한 작가이다. 그는 구상과 비구상을 넘나드는 역동적인 화법으로 자연의 아름다움을 탐구했으며, 특히 산에 대한 깊은 집착을 통해 웅장하면서도 현대적인 산의 이미지를 구축해 왔다.

민경갑의 작품은 동양적 격조를 새로운 회화 언어로 풀어내며, 수묵화의 장점을 살리면서도 특유의 질감과 감성을 탁월하게 표현한다. 그의 회화는 단순한 자연 묘사를 넘어, 해탈의 경지를 암시하는 동양 철학적 사유를 함축하고 있어 깊은 정신성을 드러낸다.

한국의 미와 세계화를 동시에 이룬 거장으로 평가받는 그는 제5·10·11·13회 국전에서 특선에 입상하며 주목받았고, 1972년부터 1979년까지 국전 초대작가 및 심사위원으로 활동했다. 2004년 대한민국예술원상, 2007년 제7회 자랑스러운 한국인 대상을 수상했으며, 제37대 대한민국예술원 회장으로 재직하다 2017년 퇴임했다. 2018년 영면할 때까지 이어진 그의 한국화에 대한 열정은 오늘날에도 작품 속에 깊이 살아 있다.

Min Kyoungkap, also known by his pen name Yusan, was born in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do in 1933 and graduated from the College of Fine Arts at Seoul National University. He is a pioneering figure who established an original approach to Korean painting, exploring the beauty of nature through a dynamic style that bridges figurative and abstract expression, with a particular devotion to the motif of mountains.

His works reinterpret Eastern aesthetic refinement through a contemporary pictorial language, preserving the strengths of ink painting while expressing a distinctive sense of texture and emotion. Beyond mere depictions of nature, his paintings embody philosophical reflections rooted in Eastern thought, suggesting a state of spiritual transcendence.

Widely regarded as a true master who achieved both the essence and globalization of Korean aesthetics, Min Kyoungkap received Special Prizes at the 5th, 10th, 11th, and 13th National Art Exhibitions, and served as an invited artist and juror from 1972 to 1979. He was awarded the National Academy of Arts Award in 2004 and the Proud Korean Award in 2007, and served as the 37th President of the National Academy of Arts until 2017. His lifelong passion for Korean painting remains vividly present in his works even after his passing in 2018.
