Michael Craig-Martin was born in Ireland, raised and educated in the United States. After receiving his degree from Yale University, he moved to the UK in 1966, where he became an influential installation artist and painter, particularly impacting the young British artists of the 1980s and 1990s.

He became a key figure among the first generation of British conceptual artists when he held his first solo exhibition at the Rowan Gallery in London in 1969. He also played a pivotal role in the 'Freeze' student art exhibition in 1988 in London. Early in his career, his works showed strong connections to American artists like Jasper Johns and Donald Judd, but in his later works, he focused more on exploring issues of representation and reality.

By enlarging everyday objects, Craig-Martin established a close relationship between image, line, words, and color in his works. His contributions to many solo and group exhibitions include his notable involvement in the 1972 'New Art' exhibition at the Hayward Gallery in London. One of his most famous works is (1973), where he used a simple cup placed on a high shelf to explore semiotic principles, signaling that the artist's intention was more important than the object itself. A major retrospective of his career was held at the Seoul Arts Center in 2022, leaving a lasting impression on his Korean fans.
