Maiko Kobayashi is a Yokohama-born artist based in Tokyo who graduated from Musashino Art University with a degree in Spatial Design. Her practice centers on charming, cartoon-like animal characters that resemble human faces, forming the core imagery of her work.

The characters express themselves solely through facial expressions and gestures, evoking emotions that feel familiar yet strange, cute yet tinged with melancholy. By using these characters as stand-ins for herself, Kobayashi gives form to emotional states shaped through relationships with others and encounters with the outside world.

Her process involves repeatedly drawing the same character forms in multiple layers, followed by the application of monochromatic backgrounds. She works with traditional Japanese washi paper—thin yet remarkably strong—mirroring the fragile yet resilient nature of human existence. The accumulated layers become sedimentations of emotion, leaving subtle, indescribable traces that quietly remind viewers that inner struggle is something each individual carries within.
