리우 웨이는 베이징에서 태어나 중국 현대미술계에서 가장 재능 있는 예술가 중 한 명으로 주목받고 있다. 1989년 중앙미술학원(Central Academy of Fine Arts)에서 판화를 전공으로 졸업한 그는 현재 베이징에 거주하며 활발한 창작 활동을 이어가고 있다.

그는 베니스 비엔날레, 세인트 폴 비엔날레, ‘Mao, Toward Pop’ 전시 등 다수의 국제 행사에 참여하며 예술 세계를 널리 알렸다. 또한 1995년 독일의 중국 신진 작가전, 1996년 ‘China!’, 1998년 베를린에서 열린 ‘Made in China – Contemporary China Art’ 등 해외 전시에 초청되어 독창적인 시각을 국제 무대에 선보였다.

1990년대 초 리우 웨이는 팡 리쥔과 함께 냉소적 리얼리즘(Cynical Realism) 예술 운동을 전개했다. 이들은 사회 현실을 직접적으로 비판하기보다 여유롭고 유머러스한 태도로 접근하며 관객과의 소통을 중시했다. 특히 리우 웨이는 자연과 꽃을 주제로 내면의 아름다움을 탐구하는 차별화된 접근을 보여주며, 일상적인 소재를 독창적으로 재구성해 새로운 시각적 경험을 제시한다.

Liu Wei was born in Beijing and is widely regarded as one of the most talented figures in contemporary Chinese art. He graduated in 1989 with a degree in Printmaking from the Central Academy of Fine Arts and currently lives and works in Beijing.

He has participated in numerous international exhibitions and events, including the Venice Biennale, the Saint Paul Biennial, and the exhibition “Mao, Toward Pop,” through which his artistic vision gained global recognition. He was also invited to overseas exhibitions such as the Emerging Chinese Artists Exhibition in Germany (1995), “China!” (1996), and “Made in China – Contemporary China Art” held in Berlin in 1998.

In the early 1990s, Liu Wei, together with Fang Lijun, initiated the Cynical Realism movement. Rather than offering direct criticism of social realities, they adopted a relaxed and humorous approach that emphasized communication with the audience. Distinct from many of his contemporaries, Liu explores inner beauty through themes of nature and flowers, reconfiguring everyday subjects in imaginative ways to offer viewers a fresh visual experience. His work holds a significant place within the trajectory of contemporary art, and his future endeavors continue to draw anticipation.
