사진작가 임수식은 중앙대학교 사진학과와 동 대학원을 졸업 후 현재 신구대학교 사진학과 겸임교수로 재직 중이다. 2007년 개인전을 시작으로 영국, 스페인을 비롯한 여러 국가에서 20회의 개인전과 100여회의 단체전에 참가하였다.

그의 작품은 대부분이 책과 관련된 것들인데, 책은 내용을 담는 문자로서의 역할보다는 이미지를 구성하는 요소로 존재한다. 원근법을 이용한 책장 형식의 책가도와 역원근법을 이용한 소품 형식의 책가도가 있다. 임수식의 ‘책가도(冊架圖)’는 다채로운 직업의 사람들이 소유하고 있는 다양한 형태의 책장을 촬영하는 것으로 시작된다.

형태는 모두 엇비슷해 보이나 책장을 메우고 있는 도서와 사물들은 그것을 소유한 사람들의 특성을 반영하고 있다. 책장은 그 소유주를 반영하는 또 다른 아이덴티티이자 상징이 된다. 사진이라는 매체가 가지고 있는 현실성과 민화가 가지고 있는 평면성을 조화롭게 접목하여 새로운 형태의 이미지를 제시하고 있다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행, 북촌미술관, 이랜드 문화재단, 독일 라이너 쿤체(Reiner Kunze) 박물관 등에 소장되어 있으며, 현재 롯데월드타워 몰에 위치한 사진 문화 향유 플랫폼, 291포토그랩스를 운영하고 있다.

Lim Soo Sik is a photographer who graduated from the Department of Photography at Chung-Ang University and completed his graduate studies at the same institution. He is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Photography at Shingu College. Since beginning his solo exhibition career in 2007, he has held twenty solo exhibitions and participated in over one hundred group exhibitions in various countries including the United Kingdom and Spain.

Most of his works are related to books, which exist not so much as carriers of written content but as elements that construct images. His work includes bookshelf-format chaekgado using linear perspective, as well as object-format chaekgado employing reverse perspective. Lim Soo Sik’s “Chaekgado (Bookshelf Paintings)” series begins with photographing bookshelves owned by people from a wide range of professions.

While the overall forms may appear similar, the books and objects filling each shelf reflect the characteristics of their owners. The bookshelf becomes another identity and symbol representing its owner. By harmoniously combining the realism inherent in photography with the flatness characteristic of minhwa, he presents a new type of image. His works are held in collections including the MMCA Art Bank, Bukchon Art Museum, E-Land Cultural Foundation, and the Reiner Kunze Museum in Germany. He currently operates 291 Photographs, a photography culture platform located in the Lotte World Tower Mall.
