이상선은 국립 서울산업대학교 조형예술학과와 독일 슈투트가르트 국립조형예술대학에서 공부했다. 이상선의 회화는 강렬한 흡입력을 가지고 있다. 그의 작품은 구상과 비구상의 경계를 허문다.

눈에 보이는 것 이상의 의미를 이미지에 개입시켜 이야기를 풍성하게 만든다. “실체 하는 것과 실체 하지 않는 것의 차이는 다만 표현 방법의 차이일 뿐이다. 구상이나 비구상에는 본질적인 차이가 없는 것 같다”고 작가는 말한다. 은유와 상징이 넘치는 아이를 소재로 한 작품은 보는 이를 불편하게 만드는 구석이 있다. 이 감정이 그의 작품이 가진 힘이다.

색에 관심이 많은 그는 평면을 더욱 돋보이게 하고 입체성을 제거하기 위해 명도와 채도를 통제한다. 최근에는 ‘추상적인 인상’ 추상화 시리즈를 작업하고 있다. 그의 작품은 남해아트센터, 미술은행, SAAB 레온베르그(독일) 등에 소장되어 있으며, 30여 회의 개인전과 설치 프로젝트 및 다수의 단체전, 베이징 레지던시에 참여하는 등 활발한 작품활동을 하고 있다.

Lee Sang Sun studied at the Department of Plastic Arts at Seoul National University of Science and Technology and at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart in Germany. His paintings possess a powerful sense of visual pull, breaking down the boundaries between figuration and abstraction.

By inserting meanings beyond what is immediately visible into his images, he enriches the narrative quality of his work. The artist states, “The difference between what exists and what does not exist is merely a difference in the method of expression. There seems to be no essential difference between figurative and non-figurative.” Works featuring children as motifs, filled with metaphor and symbolism, contain elements that make viewers feel uneasy—an unease that constitutes the strength of his work.

With a strong interest in color, he controls value and saturation in order to emphasize the flatness of the surface and eliminate a sense of three-dimensionality. Recently, he has been working on an abstract series titled “Abstract Impressions.” His works are held in collections including the Namhae Art Center, the Art Bank, and SAAB Leonberg (Germany), and he continues to be actively engaged in his practice through over thirty solo exhibitions, installation projects, numerous group exhibitions, and participation in a residency program in Beijing.
