Lee Jae Sam is a leading figure in Korean charcoal drawing, creating works that resonate deeply through a refined balance of traditional techniques and contemporary sensibilities. Using charcoal known as “geom-muk,” he achieves rich depth beneath seemingly monochromatic surfaces, depicting moonlit pine trees, plum blossoms, waterfalls, and bamboo landscapes with both realism and painterly expression.

His intense portrayals of ancient pine trees—such as Manjisong in Yeongyang, the pine trees of Hwayang-ri in Hapcheon, and the millennium-old pine of Jirisan—are considered among his most representative works. In recent years, he has moved beyond strict hyperrealism, abstractly interpreting landscapes etched into his inner consciousness, evoking poetic and lyrical emotions.

By incorporating materials such as coarse cotton cloth alongside canvas, he creates distinctive textures that emphasize the beauty and vitality of nature. His works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul Museum of Art, Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Cheongnamdae, Mimesis Museum, Hana Bank, and Kolon Group, among others.
