이가진은 청자의 유약을 현대적으로 재해석하며 재료가 지닌 물성과 표현 가능성을 탐구하는 도예가이다. 서울대학교 미술대학 디자인학부에서 도예를 전공하고 동 대학원에서 석사 과정을 마쳤으며, 청자 특유의 푸른빛과 유약의 깊이를 자신만의 조형 언어로 발전시켜왔다. 작가의 청자 작업은 ‘유약의 표현’에서 출발한다. 직접 재료를 배합해 만든 청자 유약을 두껍게 입히고 까다로운 시유와 소성 과정을 거쳐, 깊이 고인 물처럼 푸른빛이 중첩되는 특유의 색조와 깊이감을 구현한다.

작가는 유약을 단순히 도자의 표면을 장식하는 요소가 아니라 그 자체로 존재감을 지닌 하나의 물질로 바라본다. 이를 효과적으로 드러내기 위해 일반적인 용기의 구조 대신 도자의 외부 표면이 최대한 보이는 형태를 사용하며, 물방울을 연상시키는 간결하고 둥근 형태 위에 유약을 두텁게 쌓아 그 물질감을 강조한다. 이렇게 형성된 유약은 빛과 두께에 따라 미묘하게 변화하는 푸른색과 깊이감을 드러낸다. 작가는 전통적인 청자의 형식이나 기능을 그대로 재현하기보다, 동시대의 재료와 기술을 바탕으로 자신이 생각하는 ‘현대 청자’를 만들어가는 데 집중한다.

이가진은 2009년 제5회 이천 세계도자비엔날레 국제공모전과 2011년 Concorso Internazionale Premio Faenza에서 입선했으며, 2019년 청주공예비엔날레 황금플라타너스상 특별상을 수상했다. 파리 장식미술관, 사치갤러리, 밀라노 트리엔날레 뮤지엄을 비롯해 국내외 다양한 전시에 참여하며 작품 활동을 이어왔으며, 작품은 파엔차 국제도자박물관, 국민대학교 명원박물관, 서울대학교 미술관, 한국도자재단, 아모레퍼시픽 등에 소장되어 있다.

Kajin Lee is a ceramic artist who reinterprets celadon glaze through a contemporary perspective, exploring the material qualities and expressive possibilities of ceramics. She studied ceramics at the College of Fine Arts, Seoul National University, and completed her master’s degree in the same field. Over the course of her practice, Lee has developed the distinctive blue hues and depth of celadon glaze into her own visual language. Her celadon work begins with the “expression of glaze.” By applying thick layers of celadon glaze made from materials she mixes herself and undergoing a meticulous glazing and firing process, she creates distinctive tones and a sense of depth in which layers of blue accumulate like deep pools of water.

Lee approaches glaze not simply as a decorative coating for the ceramic surface, but as a material with a presence of its own. To emphasize this quality, she moves away from the conventional structure of vessels and instead employs forms that maximize the visibility of the exterior surface. Thick layers of glaze are applied to simple, rounded forms reminiscent of water droplets, accentuating the materiality of the glaze. The resulting surfaces reveal subtle variations in blue and a sense of depth that shift according to light and the thickness of the glaze. Rather than reproducing the traditional forms or functions of celadon, Lee focuses on creating her own vision of “contemporary celadon” through the materials and technologies of the present day.

Lee was selected in the 5th International Competition of the Icheon World Ceramic Biennale in 2009 and the Concorso Internazionale Premio Faenza in 2011, and received the Special Prize of the Golden Plane Tree Award at the Cheongju Craft Biennale in 2019. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Korea and abroad, including those at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Saatchi Gallery in London, and Triennale Milano. Her works are held in the collections of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Myungwon Museum at Kookmin University, Seoul National University Museum of Art, Korea Ceramic Foundation, and Amorepacific, among others.
