아토마우스는 일본의 아톰(Atom)과 미국의 미키마우스(Mickey Mouse)를 결합한 캐릭터로, ‘이동기 작가 = 아토마우스’가 자연스럽게 연상될 만큼 그의 작품 전반에 지속적으로 등장한다. 이 캐릭터는 작가의 어린 시절이었던 1970~80년대, 한국 문화가 일본과 미국의 영향을 강하게 받던 시대적 배경 속에서 자연스럽게 형성된 이미지이자, 당시 한국 사회의 현실을 풍자적으로 반영한 존재이다.

Lee Don Gi graduated from the Department of Western Painting and completed his master’s degree at Hongik University. He is widely known for his artistic practice centered on the character “Atomaus,” a cartoon-like figure that has become a defining symbol of his work.

Atomaus is a hybrid character combining Japan’s Atom and America’s Mickey Mouse, appearing so consistently throughout Lee’s oeuvre that the artist himself is often identified with the character. Rooted in the cultural landscape of the 1970s and 1980s—when Korean popular culture was heavily influenced by Japan and the United States—Atomaus embodies both personal childhood imagery and a satirical reflection on Korea’s social context of the time.
