이창조의 작품에는 자연에 대한 경외감이 깊이 스며들어 있다. 그는 평생의 반려 목으로 소나무를 키우는 농사꾼이자 산지기로서, 한국의 자연과 전통에 대한 깊은 애정을 담아 작품을 창조한다. 소나무는 우리의 선조들이 즐겨 그렸던 소재로, 도인들의 선계를 상징하고 십장생의 하나로 여겨지며 집을 지을 때 필수적인 소중한 나무였다.

이창조는 소나무가 태어나고 자라는 동안 말없이 곁에 있어 준 존재라는 점에 주목하며, 건강한 소나무를 자신의 자화상으로 여긴다. 그의 작품은 유화로 제작되지만 붓의 터치는 수묵화의 시원하고 통쾌한 느낌을 자아내며, 서양화로 동양의 정신과 시간을 담아내는 듯한 인상을 준다.

그는 그림을 통해 관람객의 정신에 영감을 불어넣을 수 있다고 믿으며, 소나무를 통해 진정성을 전달하고자 한다. 작품 속 모든 요소는 손의 움직임에 집중되어 있고, 그 움직임은 형상을 만들어내며 끝없는 변화 속에서 의미를 확장한다. 이창조는 홍익대학교 미술대학 서양화과를 졸업한 후 인사아트센터, 백송갤러리, 정부청사 문화갤러리, 금보성아트센터, 갤러리 오차드 등에서 다수의 개인전을 개최하며 자신만의 독창적인 세계를 꾸준히 선보이고 있다.

Lee Chang Jo’s works are deeply imbued with a sense of reverence for nature. A farmer and forest caretaker who has cultivated pine trees as lifelong companions, he creates his work with profound affection for Korean nature and tradition. The pine tree, long favored by ancestors as a subject of painting, symbolizes the realm of Taoist sages, represents one of the Ten Symbols of Longevity, and has historically been an essential and cherished material for building homes.

Focusing on the pine tree as a silent presence that has remained by his side throughout its growth, Lee Chang Jo regards healthy pine trees as self-portraits of himself. Although his works are created in oil paint, his brushstrokes evoke the refreshing and vigorous spirit of ink painting, suggesting an attempt to capture Eastern philosophy and the flow of time through Western painting.

He believes that painting has the power to inspire the viewer’s inner spirit and seeks to convey sincerity through the motif of the pine tree. Every element in his work centers on the movement of the hand, and through this movement, forms emerge and meanings continuously expand amid constant transformation. Lee Chang Jo graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University and has held numerous solo exhibitions at venues including Insa Art Center, Baeksong Gallery, Government Complex Cultural Gallery, Geumboseong Art Center, and Gallery Orchard.
