권옥연은 경복고등학교를 졸업하고 일본 동경미술학교와 프랑스 파리 아카데미를 졸업했다. 후기인상주의 화풍을 바탕으로 향토적이고 목가적인 작품을 선보이며, 제1회 대한민국미술전람회 입선(1949), 제5회 대한미술협회전 문교부 장관상(1953), 제5회 대한민국미술전람회 특선(1956) 등을 수상하며 작가로서의 입지를 다졌다.

1957년 파리 유학을 통해 유럽 미술의 새로운 경향을 경험한 그는 전통 기물과 상형문자 등을 모티브로 한 앵포르멜 화면을 창출하며 자신만의 독특한 추상 양식을 구축했다. 채택한 소재의 변형과 해체를 통해 과감한 추상을 구성하고, 내면으로부터 초현실주의적 풍경을 추출해 죽음과 생명의 이미지를 환기한다.

회색으로 대표되는 중간색의 미묘한 변화를 추구하며 원색을 배척하고, 기름기를 제거한 듯한 질박한 유화 물감으로 오랜 시간 붓질의 층을 달리해 독특한 화면 질감을 구현해 왔다. 특정 사조나 단체 활동에 참여하지 않고 특유의 톤과 색채로 독자적인 미술 세계를 펼친 그는 한국 근현대 미술을 대표하는 작가로 평가받는다. 2011년 타계하기 전까지 꾸준히 작품 활동을 이어갔으며, 2023년 현대화랑에서 <권옥연 100주년 기념전>이 개최되었다.

Kwon Ok Yun graduated from Gyeongbok High School and went on to study at the Tokyo Fine Arts School in Japan and the Académie in Paris. Grounded in Post-Impressionism, he presented works with a local and pastoral sensibility, establishing his reputation through honors such as selection for the 1st National Art Exhibition of Korea (1949), the Minister of Education Award at the 5th Exhibition of the Korea Art Association (1953), and a Special Selection at the 5th National Art Exhibition of Korea (1956).

Following his studies in Paris in 1957, he encountered new European artistic currents and developed a distinctive abstract language. Drawing on motifs such as traditional vessels and pictographic symbols, he created Informel compositions, constructing bold abstractions through the transformation and deconstruction of chosen forms. From within, he extracted surreal landscapes that evoke images of life and death.

Rejecting primary colors, he pursued subtle variations of intermediate tones—often centered on gray—and achieved a unique surface texture by layering brushstrokes over time with earthy, de-oiled oil paints. Without aligning himself with specific movements or groups, he forged an independent artistic world defined by his singular tones and colors, and is regarded as a leading figure in modern and contemporary Korean art. He remained actively engaged in his practice until his passing in 2011, and in 2023, the <Kwon Ok Yun 100th Anniversary Exhibition> was held at Hyundai Gallery.
