미국 게티뮤지엄이 주목한 사진작가 구성수의 작품은 뛰어난 입체감과 대형 카메라의 높은 해상력, 그리고 정교한 조명을 통해 사진을 마치 부조 작품처럼 구현하는 것이 특징이다. 그는 ‘포토제닉 드로잉(Photogenic Drawing)’이라는 독창적인 기법으로 사진계의 주목을 받아왔다.

구성수는 탈보트의 『자연의 연필(The Pencil of Nature)』에서 영감을 받아 이 기법을 고안했다고 말한다. 그의 포토제닉 드로잉은 결과적으로 사진이지만, 그 과정은 조각과 회화에 가깝다. 찰흙 판에 야생화를 뿌리까지 압착해 본을 뜨고, 식물의 윤곽이 선명한 음각이 형성되면 그 위에 석고를 붓는다.

석고가 굳은 뒤 찰흙을 제거하면 양각의 부조가 완성되며, 작가는 이 석고 부조 위에 다시 정교하게 그림을 그린 후 대형 카메라로 촬영한다. 그는 1993년 경일대학교 사진영상학과를 졸업하고 중앙대학교 사진학과에서 수학한 뒤, 계명대학교 대학원에서 사진디자인 석사 학위를, 2005년 홍익대학교 대학원에서 박사과정을 수료했다. 그의 작품은 미국 게티뮤지엄을 비롯해 샌프란시스코 현대미술관, 휴스턴 현대미술관, 산타바바라 미술관, 서울시립미술관, 삼성미술관 리움 등 국내외 20여 개 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.

Koo Sung Soo is a photographer whose work has drawn attention from the Getty Museum in the United States. His photographs are distinguished by their sculptural depth, the high resolution of large-format cameras, and meticulous lighting, transforming photographic images into relief-like forms. He gained recognition for his original technique known as “Photogenic Drawing.”

Koo explains that he developed this method after being inspired by William Henry Fox Talbot’s *The Pencil of Nature*. Although the final outcome is a photograph, the process itself is rooted in sculpture and drawing. Wildflowers are pressed—roots and all—into clay slabs to create molds, and once clear intaglio impressions of the plants emerge, plaster is poured over the surface.

When the plaster hardens and the clay is removed, a bas-relief remains. Koo then carefully paints onto the plaster relief before photographing it with a large-format camera. He graduated from the Department of Photography and Imaging at Kyungil University in 1993, studied photography at Chung-Ang University, earned a master’s degree in photographic design from Keimyung University, and completed his doctoral coursework at Hongik University in 2005. His works are held in over twenty major collections worldwide, including the Getty Museum, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Seoul Museum of Art, and Leeum Samsung Museum of Art.
