김태균은 ‘블루’를 고집해 온 사진가로, 원래는 광고 사진작가로 활동했다. 미국으로 이민을 갔다가 1990년 한국으로 돌아와 패션 화보 등을 촬영했지만, 작업에서 즐거움을 느끼지 못하고 회의감을 품게 되면서 1997년부터 순수 사진 작업으로 방향을 전환했다.

1998년 갤러리 인데코에서의 개인전을 시작으로 본격적인 작품 활동에 들어선 그는, 바다를 주제로 한 전시 이후 ‘블루’ 연작을 선보이며 다수의 개인전을 개최했다. 김태균은 같은 바다라 하더라도 결코 동일하지 않다고 말하며, 각기 다른 파랑과 파도, 수평선과 하늘, 구름이 지닌 미묘한 차이를 포착해낸다.

그의 사진 앞에 머무는 시간 동안 관객은 각각의 바다가 살아 숨 쉬듯 변화하는 순간을 경험하게 된다. 달이 뜬 바다, 눈이 내리는 바다 등 시시각각 변모하는 바다의 표정을 담기 위해, 그는 끊임없이 렌즈를 통해 바다를 응시한다.

Kim Tae Kyun is a photographer known for his persistent exploration of the color blue. Originally working as an advertising photographer, he immigrated to the United States before returning to Korea in 1990, where he photographed fashion editorials. Feeling a growing sense of doubt and dissatisfaction with commercial work, he shifted his focus to fine art photography in 1997.

He began his full-scale artistic career with a solo exhibition at Gallery Indeco in 1998. Following exhibitions centered on the sea, Kim introduced his ongoing “Blue” series and has since held numerous solo exhibitions. Emphasizing that no two seas are ever the same, his photographs reveal subtle differences in shades of blue, waves, horizons, skies, and clouds.

Spending time in front of his works allows viewers to witness each sea as a living, breathing presence. Kim continually strives to capture the ever-changing faces of the ocean—whether under moonlight or falling snow—devoting himself to observing the sea through his lens as it transforms from moment to moment.
