김태호 작가는 홍익대학교 미술학부 서양화과를 졸업 후 동 대학교 교육대학원에서 미술교육 석사를 취득했다. 포스트 단색화의 대표 작가로 그의 대표작 내재율 Internal Rhythm 시리즈는 캔버스에 연필로 작은 격자무늬를 그리고 그 위에 20회 이상의 물감층을 올린 뒤 특수 제작된 조각칼로 깎아내면서 만들어지는 이미지다.

작가는 안료를 중첩시키고, 격자의 중심에 벌집과 같은 작은 방을 만드는 고된 여정을 되풀이한다. 제각기 작은 형태의 방들을 새로운 생명을 품는 소우주. 멀리서는 단색처럼 가까이에서는 수십 가지의 다양한 색을 볼 수 있다. 그리고 더 가까이에서 들여다보면 그 안의 공간은 섬세한 리듬처럼 신비로운 화면을 보여준다.

견고한 외적 구조와 그 안에서 살아 움직이는 내재적 리듬을 동시에 드러내는 회화로 발전시켰다. 우연에 기대지 않는 철저한 장인정신과 축적의 미학을 바탕으로, 그의 작업은 평면 회화를 넘어 시간과 감각을 포괄하는 조형적 경험을 제시한다. 1987년부터 2016년까지 홍익대 회화과 교수로 재직하였으며 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 영국국립미술관, 부산현대미술관, 연세대학교 미술관, 토탈미술관, 워커힐미술관, 홍익대학교 미술관, 호암미술관, 뮤지엄 산 등에 소장되어 있다. 국내 뿐 아니라 일본, 미국, 독일 등지에서 40여 회의 개인전을 열었고, 2022년 10월, 향년 74세의 나이로 타계했다.

Kim Tae-ho graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University and earned a master’s degree in Art Education from the Graduate School of Education at the same institution. As a leading figure of post-Dansaekhwa, he is best known for his signature Internal Rhythm series. These works are created by first drawing fine grid lines on the canvas with pencil, then layering paint more than twenty times, and finally carving into the accumulated surface with specially fabricated sculpting tools. Through this demanding and repetitive process, the artist builds honeycomb-like micro-cells at the center of the grid, each functioning as a small chamber that contains its own vitality—a microcosm of new life.

From a distance, the paintings appear monochromatic, yet up close they reveal dozens of nuanced colors; upon even closer inspection, the interior spaces unfold with a delicate, almost breathing rhythm. Through this method, Kim developed a pictorial language that simultaneously reveals a solid external structure and an inner, living rhythm. Grounded in a rigorous craftsmanship that rejects chance and in an aesthetics of accumulation, his work transcends the flatness of painting to offer a sculptural and temporal sensory experience.

Kim Tae-ho served as a professor in the Department of Painting at Hongik University from 1987 to 2016. His works are housed in major public and private collections, including the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea; the National Gallery in the United Kingdom; the Busan Museum of Contemporary Art; the Yonsei University Museum; Total Museum of Contemporary Art; Walkerhill Museum; Hongik University Museum; Ho-Am Art Museum; and Museum SAN. He held over forty solo exhibitions in Korea and internationally, including in Japan, the United States, and Germany. Kim Tae-ho passed away in October 2022 at the age of 74.
