홍익대학교와 동 대학원에서 미술을 전공한 김선형 작가는 맑고 진한 청색으로 먹과 비슷한 성질을 갖고 있고, 오랜 시간 동안 색이 유지되는 특성을 지닌 ‘울트라마린(Ultramarine)’이라는 푸른색을 사용하여 작품을 한다. 그에게 이 푸른색은 단순한 색이 아니다.

그것은 시간이자 기억이며, 끝없이 변주되는 사유의 공간이다. 작가는 울트라마린을 통해 동양화의 정신성과 서구 안료의 물질성이 만나는 지점을 탐구한다. 먹처럼 깊고 오래 머무는 이 푸른색은 전통과 현대, 동양과 서양을 잇는 김선형만의 회화 언어가 된다. 화면에는 완성된 꽃이 아닌, 꽃이 되어가는 과정이 담긴다.

생성과 소멸이 공존하는 에너지, 기호와 문양, 식물의 흔적, 숫자와 한글의 파편들이 푸른 화면 위에서 유영하며 작가의 무의식과 시간의 층위를 드러낸다. 그가 말하는 파랑은 날이 밝아오는 새벽 그리고 밤이 오기 직전 하늘의 색이며 시작이자 끝 그래서 모두를 아우르는 색이다. 순수하고 깊고 맑은 파랑의 분방한 선으로 그려낸 그의 정원은 심오하고 아름답다.

Kim Sun Hyung, who studied fine art at Hongik University and its graduate school, works primarily with ultramarine, a blue pigment known for its clear yet profound tone, ink-like qualities, and its ability to retain depth and intensity over long periods of time. For the artist, this blue is far more than a color—it is time, memory, and a space of thought in constant variation. Through ultramarine, Kim explores the point at which the spiritual depth of East Asian ink painting meets the materiality of Western pigments.

Deep and enduring like ink, this blue becomes his distinctive pictorial language, bridging tradition and contemporaneity, East and West. His canvases depict not completed flowers, but the process of becoming a flower. Energies of creation and dissolution coexist, while symbols and patterns, traces of plants, numbers, and fragments of Hangul drift across the blue surface, revealing layers of the artist’s unconscious and accumulated time.

The blue Kim speaks of is the color of the sky at dawn as day breaks and just before night falls—a color that signifies both beginning and end, and thus embraces all things. His garden, drawn with free and expressive lines in pure, deep, and luminous blue, unfolds as a space that is both profound and beautifully resonant.
