The moon jar (dalhangari) of the Joseon Dynasty is a subject that has been cherished by the public across generations. Depending on the durability of the mixed materials she employs, drying times vary, and according to these properties, crackle effects (bingnyeol) emerge and are expressed pictorially. The crackle patterns that naturally occur in actual ceramics are vividly recreated on the painted surface of the moon jar, giving the works a distinctive and compelling charm. With the mindset of a Joseon-era potter, Kim attentively studies how layers of paint generate crackle effects, continually researching materials to convey the tactile presence of ceramic objects within the two-dimensional plane of painting.

Kim Sun is an established mid-career artist who has held 25 solo exhibitions and participated in over 200 group exhibitions. In addition to her prolific artistic practice, she serves as a board member of the Korea Fine Arts Association and is actively involved as both an organizer and juror for the Contemporary Women’s Art Exhibition.
