KIM SU ZUNG
김수정은 서울대학교 미술대학에서 학사와 석사 학위를 취득하고, 미국 뉴욕의 School of Visual Arts(SVA)에서 인터랙티브 멀티미디어 전공으로 MFA 석사학위를 받았다. 2003년부터 서울대학교 미술대학 디자인학부 교수로 재직하며 교육과 창작을 병행하고 있다.
그는 그래픽디자인, 인터페이스 디자인, 컴퓨터 아트 영역을 넘나들며 다수의 작품을 발표하고 전시해 왔다. 과학과 예술의 접점을 탐구하는 타나토노트/SciArt 프로젝트(2004, 인사아트센터)를 비롯해, 디자인의 새로운 물결展(2005, 광주디자인비엔날레), 노이즈 페인팅/신호탄(2009, 국립현대미술관 서울관) 등 다양한 기획전과 개인전을 통해 디지털 기반 시각 언어의 가능성을 확장해 왔다.
특히 ‘노이즈 페인팅(Noise Painting)’ 연작에서는 소프트웨어와 알고리즘을 회화적 제스처로 전환하며, 디지털 신호와 우연성, 반복과 변주의 관계를 시각적으로 풀어낸다. 이는 전통 회화의 필법을 컴퓨터 기반의 프로세스로 재해석한 시도로, 기술과 감각, 계산과 직관이 교차하는 지점을 탐색한다.
김수정은 국내외에서 활발히 전시 활동을 이어왔으며, 프랑스 갤러리 레마에서 열린 개인전 <Noise Strokes>(2013), <Noise Circle>(2015)을 통해 국제적인 주목을 받았다. 또한 미국 매크로미디어사의 피플스 초이스 어워드(1997), 커뮤니케이션 아츠·ID 매거진 선정(2002), 체코 브르노 비엔날레 선정(2000), 대한민국 여권 디자인 공모전 최고상(2008) 등 다수의 수상 경력을 보유하고 있다.
Kim Su Zung received her BFA and MFA from Seoul National University College of Fine Arts, and earned an MFA in Interactive Multimedia from the School of Visual Arts in New York. Since 2003, she has been serving as a professor in the Department of Design at Seoul National University, actively engaging in both education and artistic practice.
Her work spans graphic design, interface design, and computer art, and has been presented through numerous exhibitions and projects. Notable works include the Thanatonaut/SciArt Project (2004, Insa Art Center), New Waves of Design (2005, Gwangju Design Biennale), and Noise Painting: Signal Flare (2009, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul), through which she has explored the visual language of digital media.
In her Noise Painting series, Kim translates software processes and algorithms into painterly gestures, visually investigating relationships between digital signals, chance, repetition, and variation. Her practice reinterprets traditional brushwork through computational systems, examining the intersection of technology and sensibility, calculation and intuition.
Kim Su Zung has exhibited extensively in Korea and abroad, including solo exhibitions such as <Noise Strokes> (2013) and <Noise Circle> (2015) at Galerie Remah in France. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Macromedia People’s Choice Award (1997), selections by Communication Arts and ID Magazine (2002), the Brno Biennale (2000), and the Grand Prize at the Korean Passport Design Competition (2008).
