김세중 작가는 파리 국립 8대학에서 조형예술을 전공하며 학사와 석사를 마쳤으며, 회화적 터치와 조각적 요소가 공존하는 입체회화로, 평면과 입체, 실재와 환영이 교차하는 독자적인 형식을 구축한다. 그의 작품은 회화이면서 동시에 조각이며, 물질 자체와 빛에 의해 생성되는 그림자를 병치함으로써 새로운 시각적 변종을 만들어낸다. 이러한 인공적 변종의 형식은 기성 오브제와 페인팅을 결합하는 앗상블라주(Assemblage) 기법을 기반으로 하며, 조립과 접합을 통해 사물에 새로운 예술적 의미를 부여하려는 작업 의식으로 이어진다.

물감을 켜켜이 쌓아 올리는 작업 방식은 시간과 기억의 흔적을 기록하는 행위로, 색채와 구조, 빛과 그림자가 만들어내는 긴장감이 작품 전반에 선명하게 드러난다. 그는 색을 단순한 장식이 아닌 또 하나의 공간 해석으로 인식하며, 단색이 지닌 깊이가 공간을 확장하는 힘을 가진다고 본다. 특히 프랑스에서 직접 들여온 ‘인터내셔널 클랭 블루(IKB)’는 작가가 색채의 본질에 접근하기 위한 중요한 도구로, 순수한 색이 만들어내는 새로운 공간감을 지속적으로 실험하게 하는 매개가 된다. 프랑스와 한국을 오가며 다수의 개인전과 단체전을 이어온 김세중은, 사라지는 순간을 붙잡으려는 응시를 통해 회화의 경계를 확장하고 새로운 가능성을 탐구하고 있다.

Kim Sea Joong earned both his BFA and MFA in Fine Arts from Université Paris 8. He has developed a distinctive artistic language through relief paintings in which painterly gestures and sculptural elements coexist, creating a unique form where flatness and volume, reality and illusion intersect. His works function simultaneously as paintings and sculptures, generating new visual variants by juxtaposing physical materiality with shadows produced by light. This artificial hybridity is grounded in the technique of assemblage, through which found objects and painting are combined, and artistic meaning is generated through processes of joining and construction.

His method of building up layers of paint serves as an act of recording time and memory, while the tension created by color, structure, light, and shadow is vividly articulated throughout his works. Kim regards color not as mere decoration but as an alternative interpretation of space, believing that the depth of monochrome possesses the power to expand spatial perception. In particular, International Klein Blue (IKB)—imported directly from France—functions as a crucial tool in his pursuit of the essence of color, enabling him to continuously experiment with new spatial sensations generated by pure color.

Moving between France and Korea, Kim Sea Joong has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions. Through a sustained gaze that seeks to capture fleeting moments, he continues to explore new possibilities and expand the boundaries of painting.
