김상구는 홍익대학교 서양화과를 졸업하고 동 대학 교육대학원을 졸업했다. 1960년대 초반 판화에 입문해 1970년대 중반부터 본격적으로 목판화를 시작했으며, 50년이 넘는 시간을 목판화 작업에 집중해 왔다.

그의 작품 세계는 크게 세 단계로 구분된다. 1960년대부터 1970년대 중반까지는 수업기이자 습작기로, 1970년대 중반 본격적인 목판 작업을 시작해 1990년대에 이르기까지는 자기 세계를 확고히 다지며 틀을 완성해 가는 시기로 볼 수 있다. 1990년대 이후 현재에 이르는 시기는 자기 세계가 완숙에 이르러 최고의 경지를 보여주는 시기이다.

김상구의 목판화는 단아하고 세심한 매력을 지닌다. 나무, 새, 숲 등 자연의 사물을 소재로 한 정제된 모던함은 시대를 초월한 아름다움을 드러낸다. 1987년부터 현재까지 다수의 개인전과 단체전에 참여했으며, 국전에 3회 입선하는 등 여러 차례의 수상 경력을 쌓았다. “풍부한 색채와 더불어 목판 특유의 칼맛이 선명하게 부각된다”는 평가를 받는 그의 작품은 영국 대영박물관, 미국 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA), 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 호암미술관, 한가람미술관 등에 소장되어 있다. 2024년 디에스갤러리 개관전에서는 대영박물관 소장품을 비롯해 최신작 18점을 선보이며, 그의 작품 세계는 여전히 현재진행형이다.

Kim Sangku graduated from the Department of Western Painting at Hongik University and later completed his studies at its Graduate School of Education. He began working with printmaking in the early 1960s and has devoted himself to woodblock printing since the mid-1970s, dedicating more than five decades to this medium.

His artistic career can be broadly divided into three phases. From the 1960s to the mid-1970s may be regarded as a period of training and experimentation. From the mid-1970s, when he fully embraced woodblock printing, through the 1990s, he established and solidified his own artistic language. From the 1990s to the present marks a period of maturity, during which his work has reached its highest level of refinement.

Kim Sangku’s woodblock prints possess an abundance of understated charm, marked by elegance and meticulous attention. Using motifs such as trees, birds, and forests, he achieves a refined modernity that transcends time. Since 1987, he has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions and has received multiple honors, including three selections at the National Art Exhibition. Praised for how “the rich colors vividly accentuate the distinctive knife marks unique to woodblock printing,” his works are held in major collections including the British Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Seoul Museum of Art, the Ho-Am Art Museum, and the Hangaram Art Museum. In 2024, at the opening exhibition of DS Gallery, he presented eighteen works, including pieces from the British Museum collection, demonstrating that his artistic journey continues to evolve.
