김판기 작가는 2016년 이천시 도자기 명장 인증을 받았지만, 그 자리에 안주하지 않고 끊임없이 새로운 가능성을 모색해왔다. 과거와 전통에만 머무르지 않으려는 태도는 오늘날 그의 작업 세계를 형성하는 중요한 기반이 되었다.

그는 전통 기법을 충실히 지켜내는 동시에 현대의 공간과 감각에 자연스럽게 어우러지는 도자를 만들어간다. 전통에 동참한다는 것은 과거의 방식을 답습하는 데 그치는 것이 아니라, 현재의 가치를 이해하고 동시대와 호흡하는 것이라고 작가는 말한다. 그의 작품은 번잡한 기교나 화려한 색채보다는 대토와 유약이 지닌 고유한 물성을 드러내는 데 집중하며, 이를 위해 투명 유약만을 고집해 사용한다.

김판기는 도자 제작에서 자신만의 방식인 ‘항아리 업다지기 기법’을 통해 달항아리를 제작한다. 이는 일반적인 자연 건조 과정을 거치지 않고 물리적 건조 상태에서 바로 이어 붙이는 방식으로, 높은 집중력과 균형 감각을 요구한다. 그는 도자 작업이 순수함을 유지하며 조화와 균형을 이뤄야 한다고 말하며, 이를 통해 완벽하고 인위적인 아름다움보다는 다소 불완전하지만 인간적인 자연스러움을 지닌 작품을 추구한다.

Kim Pan Ki received the title of Master Ceramic Artist of Icheon City in 2016, yet chose not to settle into that achievement. His continued pursuit of growth stems from a conscious effort to avoid being confined solely to the past or tradition.

While remaining faithful to traditional techniques, Kim creates ceramic works that harmonize naturally with contemporary spaces. For him, honoring tradition means preserving time-honored methods while understanding and engaging with present-day values. Rather than emphasizing elaborate techniques or vibrant colors, his works focus on revealing the inherent qualities of the clay and glaze, which is why he consistently uses only transparent glazes.

Kim produces moon jars using his own distinctive method known as the “Up-Dajigi” technique, in which vessel sections are joined directly through a physical drying process rather than conventional natural drying. This method demands precision, balance, and restraint. Believing that ceramic work must maintain purity while achieving harmony, Kim seeks a beauty that is slightly imperfect yet deeply human, favoring naturalness over flawless artificial perfection.
