김명식은 세련된 화면 구성과 경쾌한 색채 구사로 국내외 화랑가에서 인기가 높다. 동아대학교 교수로 재직하면서도 국내외 80여 회에 이르는 전시를 이어온 열정적인 작가이다. 2004년 미국 롱아일랜드에서 교환교수로 재직하던 시기에 다양한 인종이 어우러져 역동적인 에너지를 발산하는 뉴욕의 모습에 매료되어, 이상향에 가까운 도시 풍경을 그리기 시작했다.

이렇게 탄생한 ‘이스트사이드 스토리’ 시리즈는 뉴욕 이스트리버 주변의 풍경과 뉴요커들의 삶을 각양각색의 집들에 담아 압축적으로 보여준다. 이전의 ‘고데기’ 연작에 비해 형태를 더욱 단순화하고 화면 구성의 밀도를 높인 것이 특징이다.

지금은 현대식 아파트촌으로 변모했지만 유년기의 기억이 깃든 ‘고데기(강동구 고덕동의 옛 이름)’를 1990년대 초부터 발표해 온 그는, ‘이스트사이드 스토리’를 또 하나의 주요 연작으로 선보이며 도시 풍경을 다루는 대표 작가로 자리매김했다. 2015년 동아대학교 정년 퇴임 후에는 용인 천리에 작업실을 마련해 산과 들, 마을을 소재로 한 ‘컨트리사이드’ 연작을 이어가고 있으며, 3년여의 준비 끝에 2023년 용인 천리에 김명식 미술관을 개관했다.

Kim Myungsik is widely recognized in both domestic and international gallery circles for his refined compositions and lively use of color. Even while serving as a professor at Dong-A University, he maintained an intense exhibition schedule, holding more than eighty exhibitions at home and abroad. In 2004, while working as a visiting professor in Long Island, the United States, he became captivated by New York’s dynamic energy created by the coexistence of diverse ethnic communities, which led him to begin painting cityscapes reminiscent of an idealized urban vision.

The resulting “East Side Story” series condenses the scenery around the East River and the lives of New Yorkers into a vibrant array of houses, capturing the essence of the city. Compared to his earlier “Godegi” series, these works are characterized by further simplified forms and a denser compositional structure.

Although the area has since transformed into a modern apartment district, Kim Myungsik began presenting the “Godegi” series—named after the former name of Godeok-dong in Gangdong-gu, where his childhood memories reside—in the early 1990s. By introducing “East Side Story” as another major body of work, he established himself as a leading artist of urban landscapes. After retiring from Dong-A University in 2015, he set up a studio in Cheon-ri, Yongin, where he has continued the “Countryside” series inspired by local mountains, fields, and villages. After more than three years of preparation, the Kim Myungsik Art Museum opened in Cheon-ri, Yongin, in 2023.
