김경화 작가는 1979년 영남대학교 회화과를 졸업하고 1981년도 이화여자대학교 대학원 회화과를 수료하였다. 1995년 첫 번째 개인전을 시작으로 주로 파리, 도쿄 등에서 전시했다. 김경화 작가의 작품은 화사한 꽃과 함께 일상적 풍경을 주 소재로 하는데 작품 속에 그려진 꽃들과 배경들이 만들어내는 지극히 평면적인 구성이 독특하다.

작품을 보고 있으면 언뜻 야수파의 마티스 작가를 떠올리게 되는데 과감하고 화려한 색감의 강렬함으로부터 느껴지는 것 같다. 김경화 작가는 꽃이 ‘생명’ 그 자체로 전달될 수 있으면 좋겠다고 말한다. 화병에 담긴 물이 꽃에 다시 생명을 부여하는 매개체가 되는 것처럼, 작가에게 있어 그의 작품은 강물 깊숙이 가라앉은 돌멩이처럼 산 지난 20년이라는 시간을 세상과 연결해 준 존재가 되었다.

힘들 때 쉬어 갈 수 있는 의자가 되는 그림, 행복의 온기가 전해지는 그림을 남기고 싶다는 작가의 바램은 작품을 바라보는 우리의 지친 마음을 위로한다.

Kim Kyung Hwa graduated from the Department of Painting at Yeungnam University in 1979 and completed coursework for the master’s program in Painting at Ewha Womans University in 1981. Beginning with her first solo exhibition in 1995, she has primarily exhibited her work in cities such as Paris and Tokyo.

Her paintings center on radiant flowers and scenes from everyday life, distinguished by the strikingly flat compositions created by the interplay between floral motifs and their backgrounds. At first glance, her work may evoke the Fauvist painter Henri Matisse, particularly through the intensity of its bold, vibrant colors. Kim Kyung Hwa has said that she hopes flowers in her paintings can be conveyed as “life itself.”

Just as water in a vase becomes the medium that restores life to flowers, her artworks have, for the artist, become a presence that reconnects two decades of lived time—once sunk deep like stones at the bottom of a river—with the world. Her wish to create paintings that serve as chairs on which one can rest during difficult moments, and paintings that radiate the warmth of happiness, offers comfort and solace to the weary hearts of those who encounter her work.
