김중백은 뉴욕의 SVA(School of Visual Arts)에서 공부하고, 1995년부터 2005년까지 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동했다. 서른 살이 되던 해 인도로 건너가 6년간 생활한 독특한 이력을 지니고 있으며, 인도에서의 일상은 새로운 삶의 방식과 기존의 관점 밖에 있던 세계를 접하는 계기가 되어 그의 미적 시각을 확장시키는 전환점이 되었다.

작가는 틀을 짜지 않은 대형 캔버스 위에서 결과나 목표를 미리 설정하지 않은 채, 자신에게서 발생한 행위와 경험, 그리고 수많은 변화의 과정을 반복적으로 그리고 지우며 작업을 이어간다. 화면 안에는 희미하게 드러나거나 덮여 보이지 않는 요소들과, 또렷하게 인식되는 형상과 의미를 규정할 수 없는 구체적 이미지들이 공존하며, 감상자에게 다양한 해석의 가능성을 열어준다.

그의 작품을 관통하는 주제는 마음의 청정함이다. 모든 혼란으로부터 자유로울 때 비로소 진정한 창작이 이루어진다고 믿기 때문이다. 끊임없이 덮고 그리는 반복 행위는 선을 추구하는 수행자의 태도와 닮아 있다. 그는 한국, 미국, 영국, 인도, 네팔에서 개인전과 그룹전, 프로젝트를 진행해 왔으며, 2021년부터는 구찌(Gucci)와 협업해 전 세계 주요 도시의 스토어에서 작품을 선보이고 있다. 현재는 제주도에 거주하며 작업 중이다.

Kim Joong Baek studied at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York and was active there from 1995 to 2005. At the age of thirty, he moved to India, where he lived for six years. His daily life in India became a pivotal turning point, allowing him to encounter new ways of living and perspectives beyond the familiar, and to further develop his own aesthetic viewpoint.

Working on large-scale canvases without predetermined frames, results, or goals, the artist repeatedly paints over and erases traces of his actions, experiences, and the countless processes of change he undergoes. Within the canvas, faint or concealed elements coexist with clearly visible forms and concrete images whose shapes and meanings remain undefined, drawing viewers into the work and opening it to multiple layers of interpretation.

The central theme running through his practice is purity of mind. He believes that true creation emerges only when one is free from all forms of confusion. The continual cycle of painting and covering resembles the disciplined practice of a seeker pursuing goodness. Kim Joong Baek has participated in solo and group exhibitions and projects in Korea, the United States, the United Kingdom, India, and Nepal. Since 2021, he has collaborated with Gucci, presenting his works in stores located in major cities worldwide. He currently lives and works on Jeju Island.
