김지원은 공주대학교 및 동 대학원에서 미술학 공예 전공 박사 과정을 수료한 작가이다. 그의 프로젝트 ‘COMMON PLANET’은 공예품과 디자인, 작품과 양품의 경계를 아우르는 생산 활동을 지향하며, 공예의 확장 가능성을 탐구한다.

도자 생산 기법인 슬립 캐스팅을 응용해 복제를 통한 요소의 다양한 변주를 시도하며, 조형성과 활용성을 겸비한 세라믹 오브제를 선보이고 있다. 이러한 작업은 반복과 변형의 과정을 통해 공예가 지닌 생산성과 조형 언어를 동시에 드러낸다.

연작 ‘To infinity and beyond!’는 픽사 애니메이션 <토이 스토리>의 캐릭터 버즈 라이트이어의 구호를 인용한 작품으로, 관측 불가능한 우주에 대한 환상을 담고 있다. 팬데믹과 뉴노멀 시대의 ‘변화’와 ‘시도’가 지닌 불안과 무게감을 일상의 도구를 통해 경쾌하게 환기하며, 백자 태토 중심의 절제된 표현에서 대척적인 색채로 확장해 보다 강렬한 심상을 구현한다. 또한 ‘Color Pills’ 시리즈는 캡슐 알약을 모티브로 한 화기로, 실린더 형태에서 둥글게 이어지는 볼륨과 다채로운 색채 조합을 통해 일상에 활력을 전달하고자 한다.

Kim Ji Won completed her doctoral coursework in Craft within the Fine Arts program at Kongju National University. Her project “COMMON PLANET” pursues a mode of production that bridges craft, design, artworks, and functional goods, exploring the expanded potential of contemporary craft.

By adapting the ceramic slip-casting technique, she presents ceramic objects that explore diverse variations through replication. Through processes of repetition and transformation, her work reveals both the productive nature of craft and its sculptural language.

Her series “To Infinity and Beyond!” references the famous slogan of Buzz Lightyear from Pixar’s <Toy Story>, envisioning a fantasy of the unobservable universe. Responding to the anxiety and weight carried by notions of “change” and “attempt” in the era of the pandemic and the new normal, she adopts a playful and uplifting approach through everyday objects. Moving from restrained expressions centered on white porcelain clay to the use of contrasting, vibrant colors, the series seeks a more intense visualization of imagined space beyond infinity. In addition, the “Color Pills” series of vessels, inspired by capsule pills, employs rounded volumes and diverse color combinations to deliver visual stimulation and vitality through objects closely tied to daily life.
