김홍식은 사진과 드로잉을 바탕으로 평면 및 설치 작업을 하는 작가로, 자신을 ‘도시의 산책자’라 자칭하며, 도시를 탐방하고 기록하는 삶을 통해 현대인의 삶과 도시의 관계를 심도 있게 탐구한다. 그의 작업은 시대적, 사회적 맥락 속에서 ‘예술 작품’으로 규정된 오브제를 금빛 틀로 영역화하고, 이를 바라보는 군중들의 시선을 다시 구성하여 포착하는 데 주목한다.

미술관이나 박물관 내부를 촬영한 사진 이미지를 스테인리스 스틸에 옮기고 부분적으로 채색한 뒤, 그 위에 금박으로 출력된 액자를 덧붙이는 기법을 통해 작품 속에 또 다른 작품을 품고 있다. 그는 관람객들이 핸드폰과 사진기를 통해 바라보는 실재의 명작들에 주목하며, 미술관과 그 안의 관람객을 관찰자의 시선으로 새롭게 조명한다. 이러한 방식은 삶 속의 삶, 생각 속의 생각, 틀 속의 사람과 사람들 간의 끊임없는 관계를 독창적인 구조로 경험하게 하는 매력을 지니고 있다.

김홍식은 서울에서 태어나 이화여대에서 서양화를 전공한 후 동 대학원에서 석사와 박사 학위를 취득했다. 미국 Wright State University, 한가람미술관, 금호미술관 등에서 다수의 개인전을 개최했으며, 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관 등 여러 단체전에 참여하여 그의 예술적 역량을 선보였다. 그는 현대판화공모전에서 우수상을 수상하고 환기미술관 상을 받았으며, 국립현대미술관, 경기도미술관, 인천 파라다이스 리조트 등 여러 기관에 그의 작품이 소장되어 있다.

Kim Hong Shik is an artist who works across two-dimensional media and installation, grounded in photography and drawing. Referring to herself as a “flâneur of the city,” she explores the relationship between contemporary life and urban space through a practice rooted in walking, observing, and recording the city. Her work focuses on objects designated as “artworks” within historical and social contexts, framing them with gold-colored borders to demarcate territory and reconfiguring the gaze of the crowds who observe them.

By transferring photographic images of museum and gallery interiors onto stainless steel, partially adding color, and then attaching frames printed in gold leaf, she creates works that contain other works within them. She pays close attention to canonical masterpieces as they are viewed through the lenses of visitors’ mobile phones and cameras, reexamining museums and their audiences from the perspective of an observer. This approach offers a compelling experience of layered relationships—life within life, thought within thought, and people within frames—revealed through an original structural composition.

Kim Hong Shik was born in Seoul and majored in Western painting at Ewha Womans University, where she later earned both her master’s and doctoral degrees. She has held numerous solo exhibitions at venues including Wright State University in the United States, Hangaram Art Museum, and Kumho Museum of Art, and has participated in various group exhibitions at institutions such as the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, and the Seoul Museum of Art. She has received the Excellence Award at the Contemporary Printmaking Competition and the Whanki Museum Award, and her works are held in the collections of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Paradise City in Incheon, and other institutions.
