김은주 작가는 연필의 흑연이 지닌 노동집약적인 속성을 통해 생명의 순환과정을 그려낸다. 약 30년 가까이 연필이라는 소박한 재료 하나만으로 경이로운 화면을 구축해 왔으며, 반복과 축적의 시간을 고스란히 작업 안에 담아낸다.

연필심에서 묻어나는 흑연 가루가 종이 표면에 남기며 만들어내는 광택은 때로 거울처럼 반사되고, 선의 방향에 따라 붓 터치와 같은 유기적인 움직임을 만들어낸다. 그의 화면은 단순한 검은색에 머무르지 않고, 조명의 밝기와 각도, 관람자의 움직임에 따라 검은빛이 리듬과 율동을 획득한다.

Kim Eun Ju explores the cycle of life through the labor-intensive process inherent in graphite pencil drawing. For nearly three decades, she has worked exclusively with this humble medium, constructing astonishing visual fields shaped by time, repetition, and accumulation.

The graphite dust transferred from the pencil lead onto paper produces a subtle sheen that can reflect light like a mirror, while the direction of each pencil stroke creates movements reminiscent of brushwork. Her surfaces are not simply black; depending on lighting conditions, viewing angles, and the viewer’s movement, the dark tones acquire rhythm and a sense of motion.

Encountering her work in person reveals the physical intensity and devotion embedded in the process, often moving viewers on a visceral level. Kim Eun Ju’s works are included in the collections of the Busan Museum of Art, Pohang Museum of Steel Art, Ananti Club Gapyeong, Seoul Square, the MMCA Art Bank, Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, and numerous other institutions.
